The Horse Psychic

The Horse Psychic

I’m pulling out all the stops… Yesterday I had a psychic come to our property to “read” my horses and the land… Surprised? Oh…….come on……. …..you shouldn’t be by now! …..and here’s a spoiler…….it’s not the first time she’s been here either… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sabrina came yesterday… (alias…alias…alias) She’s crusty…….I like her… Years ago (2004) she was here to read two of our horses… One of which, we were having a great deal of behavioral trouble with……. Sabrina told us…….all she…

Addy——Here We Go Again…

Addy——Here We Go Again…

So now let’s delve into the “Saga-of-Addy”……. Or maybe, given our recent two year span, it should be called “The Sad Sojourn of the Farm in the Swamp”(?) Addy seemed off her food two weeks ago…….her head-set was carried lower than normal…….her eye focus was not quite right……. …….you know, all those intangible things that set off flares and alarms!?!… So, I started taking her temperature… It was elevated…………. …..103.4F….. …..@#$%$#@! Our vet zipped by and took blood for comparative…

Opportunistic Papaya

Opportunistic Papaya

I didn’t plant it… It just showed up… …..and kept growing… …..and growing… …..and growing…… I don’t remember even buying a papaya anytime during the last year… …..but someone in the area must have……. …..and then aided by some low-flying, papaya-fed, digesting bird……. Voila! …..Papaya Tree! …..actually I’ve discovered, it’s not a tree……. …..it’s an herb….. What!?! …..well then, it’s a really big herb. ***More Information Than You Ever Needed To Know About Papayas*** Our “tree” is over two-stories tall…

Fasted Bloodwork

Fasted Bloodwork

I’m a complainer… I’m a procrastinator… Sometimes I’d prefer to keep my head in the sand and not know what’s going on… And sometimes I have to pull up my big girl panties and act like an adult…………. I don’t like tests on my body… The older I get…….the more tests I need… My warranty is winding down… I don’t mind the actual tests……….it’s fitting them into my day. So many steps have to happen… It’s a pain in the…………………neck….

Shaving A Clyde

Shaving A Clyde

Call it Clydesdale-sacrilege, if you will……. I’ll get to their full-body clipping later… But for today, we were just concentrating on their leg feathers… Two horses;  Eight legs… Hours of scissoring.  Hours of shaving… I learned this time and wore my work gloves. Otherwise, holes would have been worn into my thumb joints………….again… That would have been because of the need for preliminary scissor-cutting of that extra long, tough Clydesdale leg hair……. (I measured some of it…….9-plus inches) We needed…

Update

Update

Addy’s bloodwork came back. It was slightly improved from the last panel which was done the third week in June. It wasn’t great…….but it was better……. Her first two blood panels in March and April were bad… And we don’t know why… …….but they’ve gotten progressively (albeit slowly) better since then… …….and this most recent one was better still…(not great, but better)… I wish I could figure out how to get the reports copied to this blog…….but that’s beyond…

Worming The Cats

Worming The Cats

Parasites happen. It’s disgusting…..but true. They are more places than what we realize……. …….and sometimes they’re beneficial.   But, my kitty-kat-ums all needed worming………… …….just don’t ask me how I know…….yuck……. Good animal husbandry means you have to keep up with regular wormings of everybody. ………….but, I HATE worming the cats… …they hurt me……. Horses are easy to worm. Some of them even like it…….we’ve had a couple in the past who would chase you down if they saw the…

A Course In Therapeutic Stretching

A Course In Therapeutic Stretching

Just what is therapeutic stretching? My mind immediately goes to…………. …….what is NON-therapeutic stretching?   Snapping an Achilles tendon with an overly-zealous foot stretch?   Rotating a low-back vertebrae into orbit with too much forced back torsion? Sounds interesting…………….! A person should always approach providing therapy with a calm, conscientious, soothing demeanor.   I must be a good actress, because I have been doing that for years…….. ………….New’s Flash:  it’s not the real me………….HA! Here’s an example…….I worked with…

Enteroliths & Bezoars

Enteroliths & Bezoars

Having just dealt with Urinary Calculi in buck goats……. …….I got to thinking…….(always dangerous)… Professor Dillamond’s experience reminded me of other mineralized build-ups in the various mammals I’ve known… I fondly refer to them as gut-rocks. Apparently there are an entire assortment of types and locations in animals (the people-kind too). Florida seems to be an important culprit…     Maybe it’s the heat with the resulting sweating leading to chronic/constant semi-dehydration…   Or maybe it’s the minerals in…

Professor Dillamond Can’t Pee

Professor Dillamond Can’t Pee

Pascal, I need to remind you…….this is a farm blog…….with posts that would probably not be acceptable as party conversations… This is probably going to be one of those entries…   We are a small homesteading farm… We have a variety of self-sustaining (HA!) animals and participants.   We have two buck goats who have a job to do.         One Boer meat goat buck (Optimus Prime) and one Oberhasli dairy goat buck (Professor Dillamond). We’ve…
