~Here We Go Round~

~Here We Go Round~

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* We don’t have a mulberry bush…we have a mulberry tree….. Normally it bears fruit prolifically….. The squirrels…crows…and general bird population…and ME do battle to collect the berries….. This year was no exception…with regard to the quantity of mulberries….. …..but the foliage is not right….. There’s a lot of fruit…but the leaves feel dry and they are curled at the edges….. They aren’t falling off…but they are sparser than usual…and they sure aren’t happy…

Duck Eggs

Duck Eggs

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Remember the ducklings that I got through the mail-order catalog last spring?….. They’ve started laying eggs….. …..I can tell it’s them…because they don’t lay in the wall-mounted nesting boxes like the chickens do….. They lay their eggs in the mud….. Ducks and water and mud………….the perfect trifecta….. Duck eggs are large and substantial compared to chicken eggs…even with the younger duck hens….. …..they are hands down bigger…and usually their shells are much thicker…

*****Missed It*****

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* I just had to add this….. Another post-holiday note….. Remember when my family went to bed early on New Years Eve?….. Everyone was tucked in…visions of sugar plums…the chickens were safely perched in their coop…the horses were dozing…the goats were stealth-ing their way into some expected nocturnal mischief….. And…I slept through the night…which is saying a lot….. …..but apparently I shouldn’t have….. Doctor Brigid (who lives…as the crow flies…about a half mile from…

~And The Year Begins Again~

~And The Year Begins Again~

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Yesterday was the shortest day of the year….. …..the Winter Solstice….. It’s just about pitch black by 5:00pm every evening now….. Awhile ago we started this relaxed annual tradition of having a bonfire on the Winter Solstice….. …..and we’ve had one ever since…kind of on-again…off-again…but semi-planned…nonetheless….. It’s fun…it’s pleasant…it’s relaxing….. The Infamous Big Purple Cups are involved…along with mediocre bourbon and cheap wine coolers…(good hang-over material)….. …..junk food…S’mores…cookies….. …..you know…a healthy meal….. Weather-willing…lawn…

I suppose…if it’s going to be posted at all…it should be around Halloween….. …..I suppose….. You see…some might consider this subject…indelicate….. We’ve lived here…on this little farm…for over thirty years….. Our homestead has seen a lot of animals come…and go….. It’s an unfortunate and sad fact of life….. I suppose…I’m…

~Un-Planned Vet Visit~

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** I was just about to write an up-date on Acacias…(he’s huge)….. He’s just turned six months old….. But before I could finish…Acacias decided to make an emergency visit to the veterinarian….. A couple days ago…my daughters and I and Acacias…spent hours in Doctor Russell’s office….. Acacias is fine now…but at the time…we were sure he was a goner….. Puppy-Boy had been up to no good in the back yard….. …..his malfeasance was quick…

Less Ducks In A Row?

Less Ducks In A Row?

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** Well…Damn….. Remember my post…back the end of May…when Doctor Brigid and I were sipping “tea” on the mounting block and watching for the Runner Duck hen to come off her nest for food & water?….. …..and we waited….. …..and we waited….. …..and she never showed….. *************Guys—I’m a little slow on the up-take************* …..maybe she’s not on a nest?….. …..maybe she’s not coming back?….. Maybe she was one of Rocket’s first meals?………….(well…damn)….. In hindsight…(why…

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** *****Today started out early…while it was still dark…which is saying a lot…because the days are longer now…and dawn comes earlier….. …..but tell the roosters that….. …..(and yes…we did recently take five (5) more roosters to the auction…(we would’ve taken six…but we couldn’t find the last one…after scouring the rafters & lofts & limbs)…so we don’t know what happed to  #6….. …..(yes we do)….. So the mornings are less cacophonous…(there are still four roosters…

*****What!?! Is This!?!*****

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** What  Is  This!?!?!?….. I was NOT expecting this!….. It shouldn’t have been in our backyard…it smelled really bad….. Acacias found it and thought it was grand!….. …..But Wait….. …..Let me back up…and set the stage….. First thing in the mornings…most of us…move slowly when we’re getting up….. …..things are out-of-focus…until that first cup of coffee kicks in….. That first cup has been delayed for me…because Acacias (and his leaky puppy-bladder) has taken priority….. So…first thing…ALL…
