*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* I don’t know how many Patrice’s I’ve known over the years….. *****(What’s A Patrice?~Swamp Hag Blog~A Glossary Of Terms)***** From the time of their purchase…to the point where they sigh & die…I’ve gotten to know each and every one of them very well…one could say intimately….. Each Patrice has been unique…one-of-a-kind…with individualized quirks & idiosyncrasies….. From the moment I first take her out of the bag…and crack the folds out of a crisp…

Bartholomew and the Blacksmith

Bartholomew and the Blacksmith

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* We recently had our blacksmith out to trim the Clydesdale ladies’ hooves….. And…it was also time for Bartholomew to have his very first trim….. …..much like a little boy’s very first hair cut….. These kinds of farm events can be smooth & simple….. Or they can just as easily turn catastrophic & calamitous….. Fortunately…this first hoof trim was (fairly) easy and quick….. …..(probably because Bartholomew weighs less that a hundred pounds)….. In addition…my…

Tyra Taking Names

Tyra Taking Names

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* When a new horse is added into a pasture…there is always a political shake down with regards to the equine hierarchy of the group….. Actually the same thing happens with other livestock too…cows…dogs…goats…chickens….. And quite often the new kid on the block enters in at the bottom of the ladder….. But…not so with Miss Tyra….. When Tyra arrived a few weeks back…the mare’s pecking order was inevitably going to change….. …..(look at that…

51 Chicks

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* They’re here….. They came from a Minnesota hatchery via overnight service with the United States Postal Service….. And bright and early…they were waiting for us at our main post office….. I only ordered forty-two chicks(?)………….(and honestly…that was too many)….. …..but the hatchery delivered more………….they actually sent fifty-two….. And to date…fifty-one are peeping around…fluffy…cute…hale & hearty…and loud….. …..the one little chick that didn’t make it…died within the first forty-eight hours…I don’t know why…(true to…

The Summer Rains

The Summer Rains

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* It’s true….. The regular afternoon thunder boomers have finally begun….. These are separate from the potential of impending tropical storms….. These afternoon lightening extravaganzas have more to do with the daily Gulf water evaporation….. …..and the on shore/or off shore breezes…which move around as the day heats up…or cools down….. As a result…we usually get afternoon lightening storms that you can set your watch by….. With the summertime heat…the regular storms help to…

Chicken Wire Repair

Chicken Wire Repair

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Repairs around a farm are a revolving To Do List….. You can’t expect it’s ever going to be a completed list….. The best you can hope for is a list that’s semi under control….. Because sure as the day is long…there’s going to be a fresh disaster…which requires immediate attention…and quickly gets graduated to the Top of the List….. We have some fairly decent poultry coops here on the farm…they aren’t the of…

Desert Dust…or…Hurricane

Desert Dust…or…Hurricane

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* So…we get desert dust blowing over us…OR…we get an atmosphere that’s prone for a hurricane….. Hmmmmm…decisions…decisions….. Of course…none of this is up to me….. But once again…here goes my best attempt at being an amateur aging meteorologist….. We’re deep into July…and there’s perhaps only the first sign of any tropical weather developments….. We didn’t have ANY named storms in June….. And so far…there have been no tropical named anything….. That predicted Super-Dee-Dooper El…

Air Conditioning #101

Air Conditioning #101

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Well…we’re in the deep depths of a Florida summer….. Using the word…”sweltering” doesn’t really do it justice….. Intolerable…blazing…swollen…squishy…searing…scorching…sluiced…bacterial…waterlogged…decomposing….. Oh………….and molding….. It’s so easy to crawl into anything that has a motorized artificial environment…(i.e. air-conditioning)…and hibernate until the weather breaks….. …..sometime in November….. We hope for daily rains…which don’t always happen….. When they don’t….. …..the temperatures easily climb well into the ninety’s…(and that’s even before the “feels like” temperatures…which are well into the hundred’s)……..
