We’re Still At It…….Addy & Me

We’re Still At It…….Addy & Me

Remember the ninety (90) pills I’m giving to Addy every day?… We’re still at it… She’s even less happy with me now… She’s developed her own little (?) avoidance habits… …..like putting her head up even higher……. …..I just go up extra steps on the stepladder to reach her……. …..or slowly (because she is an inherently kind horse) pushing her cheek up against me until I have to step back down the ladder (or else get swept off of it…

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

It gets dark at this time of year so quickly… It’s hard to get the outside chores done in the daylight. We’re still medicating Addy twice a day with 45 capsules dissolved in water each time… It’s hard enough trying to accomplish that in the full light of day, much less while she’s jiving and diving in the dark……. …..I don’t blame her…….it really tastes BAD! I’ve gotten that stuff in my hair…in my eyes…lots of it in my mouth…

The Holiday Sprint

The Holiday Sprint

Maybe the Holidays should be more accurately identified as a Sprint combined with a Marathon… Today for example: Wake up. Brush multiple cats off face. Feed cats; feed hounds; feed puppies; clean puppy kennels. Go outside (take multiple deep breaths to clear my head of the morning house-fumes). Feed chickens/turkeys/rabbits/goats/pigs…….and then the horses. Check on Poppy (who had decided to opportunistically break down the already dry-rotted fence posts yesterday…….and then gorge on a compressed alfalfa block…….and then subsequently colic…….). Yesterday…

The Horse Psychic

The Horse Psychic

I’m pulling out all the stops… Yesterday I had a psychic come to our property to “read” my horses and the land… Surprised? Oh…….come on……. …..you shouldn’t be by now! …..and here’s a spoiler…….it’s not the first time she’s been here either… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sabrina came yesterday… (alias…alias…alias) She’s crusty…….I like her… Years ago (2004) she was here to read two of our horses… One of which, we were having a great deal of behavioral trouble with……. Sabrina told us…….all she…

Opening Hunt Meet

Opening Hunt Meet

Yesterday was our fox hunt club’s Opening Hunt Meet. It was the official opening of the Fox Hunting Season following the Cubbing Season. It was held at one of our favorite venues. An absolutely beautiful ranch with pastures and woods and streams and bridges and ponds. My younger daughter and I couldn’t go this year……. …..again… She’s not ready yet to ride her new horse, Anja……. …….which reminds me, I haven’t written about Anja yet——-(her purchase, or her shipment (from…

University Of Florida Botanist’s Opinion

University Of Florida Botanist’s Opinion

And around and around we go………… The weed photos were dutifully sent to U. of  F. And surprise, surprise, surprise…………. …..none of the weeds were considered poisonous to horses or livestock…………. …..well, that’s not entirely true……. Weed #5 (they believe) is from the “mallow” family. It could cause higher than normal nitrate levels in the blood…….IF the plant is stressed and then eaten………….(?) …..well…….Weed #5 didn’t look “stressed” or even nibbled on by the horses.  There were only two of…

Addy——Here We Go Again…

Addy——Here We Go Again…

So now let’s delve into the “Saga-of-Addy”……. Or maybe, given our recent two year span, it should be called “The Sad Sojourn of the Farm in the Swamp”(?) Addy seemed off her food two weeks ago…….her head-set was carried lower than normal…….her eye focus was not quite right……. …….you know, all those intangible things that set off flares and alarms!?!… So, I started taking her temperature… It was elevated…………. …..103.4F….. …..@#$%$#@! Our vet zipped by and took blood for comparative…

All Hallows Eve & All Saints Day

All Hallows Eve & All Saints Day

………….phew, this has been a super busy week and then some…………. Our Hunt Club Tea went well… People were well fed… Music blared.  (A huge industrial fan had to be enlisted (we have record breaking heat here in Florida for this time of the year.) I feel good when people not only eat the food I’ve made, but also take carrots for their horses along with a take home plate for later for themselves……. …..that means the food must’ve tasted…

Halloween Fun-ness!

Halloween Fun-ness!

Halloween is coming up. So is my first Hunt Club Tea. The Tea’s on Wednesday evening (tomorrow). Halloween is on Thursday. I’m planning my menu now. Shaving A Clyde

Shaving A Clyde

Call it Clydesdale-sacrilege, if you will……. I’ll get to their full-body clipping later… But for today, we were just concentrating on their leg feathers… Two horses;  Eight legs… Hours of scissoring.  Hours of shaving… I learned this time and wore my work gloves. Otherwise, holes would have been worn into my thumb joints………….again… That would have been because of the need for preliminary scissor-cutting of that extra long, tough Clydesdale leg hair……. (I measured some of it…….9-plus inches) We needed…
