May Day ~~~ Tra! La!

May Day ~~~ Tra! La!

It’s the First of May! Whoopie! It’s a day that (for me) symbolically signals the beginning of Summer… The Sweltering…..Steaming…..Sauna…..of a Sub-Tropical-Summer in Sunny Florida… I could celebrate the First of June as the summer’s symbolic start… But the first of June is the beginning of Hurricane Season……. …..so, I’m not too thrilled about celebrating “that” one… ~~~~~~~So, the First of May it is~~~~~~~ Tra!  La! Today was sunny and cool with a brilliant blue sky… I hope it bodes…

~~~Country Critters~~~
~~~Country Critters~~~

A couple days ago, I was looking out my bedroom window into the pasture and I saw Brave & Claire tap-dancing around “something” on the ground… They were both acting silly… There was a shiny/lurching mound on the ground… It was a large turtle… I booked it out the front door as quickly as possible…..I didn’t want the horses pawing or trampling the poor turtle… So, I gingerly navigated and dove through the electric fence…..I knew one of the wires was…

It’s Caterpillar Season

It’s Caterpillar Season

  Yippee…….(!)… It’s an annual event……… Something to look forward too…..(?)… IT’S………………………CATERPILLAR SEASON!!!!!!! They show up every year on or about this month……. …………………but is it really something to look forward too?…………………. At a certain point these caterpillars love to drop on you from the trees above you……. …..some people are allergic to these creepy bugs……. …..just look at the spiky…hairy…sticky-out thingies all over them…….(!)… …..I suppose I should do some research on these boogers……. …..I don’t even know what…

One More Cold Day In Florida…….(?)

One More Cold Day In Florida…….(?)

…..if we’re lucky, we might eke out another mini-freeze……. …..and maybe with another very cold night, we will frost-bite a few more skeeters, for good measure……. …..I’m really hoping that will happen. …..I think we’re forecasted to go down to the high thirties……. …..usually that means (where we are here) we will get down a little lower……. …..I’ll happily take that. I’ve been sleeping with socks on in anticipation……. …..or maybe it’s just because I’m getting old and my circulation…

~~~It’s That Time Again~~~
~~~It’s That Time Again~~~

NETTLES!!! Those @#$%@# ‘ed weeds are back…….(AGAIN)……. …..sigh……. …..I don’t want to deal with them……. …..I don’t want to write about them…….again……. So…..I won’t……. …..I don’t want to have to spray them……. …..I don’t want to torch them with one of those hand-held, incendiary-thingies that Jimmy Billy suggested last year…….(although that does sound intriguing)… …..maybe if I ignore them thoroughly…..maybe…..just maybe…..they will go away……. I hate these @#$%@#’ed fireweed-nettles……. (Should you be interested…..here are past posts on these booger-plants…….  …

Tomorrow Is Ground Hog Day

Tomorrow Is Ground Hog Day

Tra!  La! Today is Ground Hog Day Eve… Punxsutawney Phil will be very busy…   I grew up cheek & jowl close to Pennsylvania…….so Ground Hog Day is a biggie for me… …..well, that and the fact that it’s another chance for a party (with mediocre Bourbon)… ………………….but we don’t have Ground Hogs in sub-tropical Florida………………… We don’t have many burrowing animals here in general……. …..maybe that’s because we are so close to sea-level (at the best of times)…….and their…

One Cold Day In Florida

One Cold Day In Florida

We Had A Hard Freeze!!! Tra!  La! Take that mosquitoes! I don’t think we’ve had a hard freeze for the past two winters at least… We need at least one a winter to kill off the green-gooies that get to thriving in the heat and humidity down here…….(witness Ben’s head). And the mosquito population has been growing each year exponentially. As an aside…….did you know that we have elected officials who head up our Mosquito Control Division? ***Our Elected Mosquito…

The Nuances Of Mowing

The Nuances Of Mowing

Along with a day’s worth of mowing… …..I got to visit with friends… I had a long interaction with a male Red-Shouldered hawk while mowing the pasture in the front. If you remember from an earlier post, he and I have a symbiotic-relationship. The tractor and I beat the ground with twirling/metal blades, while he sits in various perches…..following us…..waiting….. He’s an opportunistic dude… …..he’ll swoop in after I’ve gone past and scoop up interesting “things” in his talons. Then…

Bush Hogging…….Again…

Bush Hogging…….Again…

If it weren’t for the spinning blades, roaring noise, splintering/flying wood and small-to-medium-sized-rock-projectiles……. …..bush hogging would be relaxing… …..there is the “white noise”… …..but it’s drowned out by the ear-deadening grinding, chopping, and hacking of all of the hidden (and not-so-hidden) wind-fall and stuff on the ground. …..at least the temperature is survivable this time of year… …..I can get off & back on the tractor without searing my bottom on the sun-baked/cracked/vinyl seat… ~~~~~And Then There’s My Favorite Friend—–The…

Fungus ~~ Among-Us

Fungus ~~ Among-Us

All is well… But a trip to Dr. Russell’s was necessary for Ben. He had developed a mysterious/crusty “something” on the crown of his head and then another “something” on the top of his muzzle. My go-to is always…………………………SNAKE BITE!!! …..but there were no swelling/weeping puncture wounds anywhere….. Phew… Then after a closer look…..it looked like he might have aggravated one of the girls outside (not surprising…..most days he is a phenomenal twit)…..and the girl hound had her final say…
