Sometimes The Crows Win…….And Sometimes It’s Me…

Sometimes The Crows Win…….And Sometimes It’s Me…

I know why a flock of crows is called a murder of crows… We do battle daily… Me versus the crows… It’s actually pretty sad that I’m posting about my negative, social interactions with residential birds… One would expect there are more important things to write about rather than honing in on my personal conflict with regional birds… Nah…………. …..I got nothin’ better… Actually it’s just one crow in specific… (At times like this I realize I’ve stayed in the…

Where Have All The Eggs Gone?…

Where Have All The Eggs Gone?…

We have a ten compartment laying box for all the hens in our chicken coop. It’s old, but it functions.   I’ve got comfortable/astro-turf bases for each of the compartments     There’s an upper level and a lower level……. ………each with a full-length perch running along the outside from end to end for easy…………well…………perching…   Their nesting/laying boxes are safely & securely attached to the wall on the inside of their coop. It’s cooler in there… It’s safer…

Barred Owls vs. Swamp Hag

Barred Owls vs. Swamp Hag

A true story……….(aren’t they all?) So I wasn’t very successful hatching out the passel of eggs that I was trying to incubate recently… I’m not taking full responsibility for the lack of chicks or ducklings…   I’ve gotten better at candling. For the most part, these boogers weren’t fertile……………..?   Come on, guys!                I’ve done my part! The rest is up to you! Do I need to put up Health Department posters?…

Multi-Purpose Horse Trailer & Chick Hatchery

Multi-Purpose Horse Trailer & Chick Hatchery

The Speckled Sussex hen is at it again… She has successfully laid a clutch of eggs and has sat on said nest for about twenty-one days and now has a cute little brood of yellow & brown cotton-ball-shaped chicks running around the inside of my horse trailer… It’s a safe place for them…     Well not totally safe, but better than a lot of places…   What the hen didn’t think about…………………………was what to feed them after they…

And The Results Are In……………..(aka The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost)

And The Results Are In……………..(aka The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost)

The Open Poultry Show is now recorded in the archives for Poultry Posterity… The chickens are awaiting their release day… Now they are just showing themselves off for the public and general fair-goer. ……….Why is it………just about every fair patron………who passes a cow………has to go………moooooooooooooooo………???     Those of us who frequent the livestock pavilion, will sit on the stacked hay bales and watch the variety of passer-bys (it’s better than analyzing Walmart shoppers after midnight)…     ……………..and…

Weather Report

Weather Report

Just checked in with the Wunderground Weather site for the day. It’s a daily must. We got Florence.  We got Isaac.  We got Helene.  They are all just swirling away out there in the Atlantic. It looks like, at least, Helene will twirl all by herself out in the middle of the ocean. I’m keeping my eye on Isaac……………and Florence looks bad. Not necessarily bad for us here in the Gulf of Mexico. But bad for further up the…

Chicken Stupidity………………..(and repeat).

Chicken Stupidity………………..(and repeat).

(See “Chicken Intellect”—post/published—March 10, 2018). I might as well just re-post the entry from March. Those silly biddies are at it again! Longevity is not in their game-plan… Just about the same identical situation happened again. Well one thing can be said for sure…………………..the errant hen made it back home……………………twice now! I thinks she might be discouraged now, because we don’t just remove her eggs…………….we’ve left at least one broken one in her make-shift nest under the tool chest in…

It’s Pyro-Technic-Time!!!

It’s Pyro-Technic-Time!!!

It’s time for Florida’s three days of cold.  I have seven cords of wood. I’m ready. I spent a day with the front-end-loader picking up and stacking firewood.  I’ve knocked off carpenter ants, red ants, worms, chameleons that aren’t chameleons (but I can’t remember what they are actually called).  I wore gloves and boots and the weather was cool-ish, so the likely-hood of highly interactive, poisonous snakes was on the low side.  But I kept my one-good-eye peeled for…

You Know You’re Tired When………..

You Know You’re Tired When………..

Got up.  Dealt with bounding house animals. Checked tea pot for left-over tea.  Started new kettle.  Washed out tea pot while nuking left-over tea from yesterday.  Thought about composting tea bags.  Decided not to (again).  Dealt with newly-found dirty dishes in sink.  It’s magic how they materialize after midnight. Used hot water to clean gathered eggs found in a pail by the sink (that one’s on me, I left them there).  Lined up cleaned eggs to air-dry on…
