Yard Work…….

Yard Work…….

It’s Hurricane Season…………………….again…..(sigh)…     Yes it is……..   There’s no denying it.     We have a big “yard” to keep up with.     A couple days ago, I tried to crank up “Ole Sparky” (I do every month)………. …..and “Ole Sparky” just spluttered and spit… The usual suspects were ruled out… The battery was still good/chargeable/and holding a charge… The starter was okay. The fuel was just fine and not gooey   The chickens do like…

Memoirs Revisited

Memoirs Revisited

So many things to write about. I hadn’t been that shaky tired for a long time.  My truck even sighed and died (temporarily) at one of the Hunts.  I had to be jumped and then get two new batteries.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My stained glass panel sold at the Silent Auction during the Ball, as well as my silly painting.  So I made a little bit of money for our Hunt. I’ve finally gotten the photos on the computer, so here…

The Year Of The Goat

The Year Of The Goat

Surprise~~~~~the last few days have been spent on fixing fencing. Surprise!  !@*%#$*@#@! I have no other activities it seems……………..in my spare time, I fix fencing. Ugh.  This is getting old.  I can’t put on or take off rings because my fingers are contused and swollen from hammer smashes. Old, hard, pine posts combined with my all-time favorite hammering projectile………………..the fence staple.  They are both a nasty combination.   Those things have got to have been created by the same…

More Fence Repair & Fresh Disasters………..

More Fence Repair & Fresh Disasters………..

Well, I didn’t go Hunting today.  More necessary/mandatory/immediate fence repair was absolutely necessary. A day late and a dollar short.   Here’s a disclaimer.  This is a farm blog.  Not all posts can be humorous. Some are heart-breaking. With farms come births and deaths.  Sowing and reaping.  Planting and discing.  Circles.  Lots of cycles. So, remember how I fixed the front mare’s fencing, but ran out of daylight and hadn’t fixed the back yet.  I had located where the…

Farm Maintenance vs. Fun…………….

Farm Maintenance vs. Fun…………….

I “think” I’ve fixed all the strands of the front pasture fencing.  But I can’t find the fence tester………………and I’m not about to be the sacrificial victim———-well not willingly anyway.  I do it unwillingly all the time. But come on………………………I don’t purposefully check the fence’s charge by grabbing onto a wire.     It was making a great cracking sound where I found it shorted out against the field fencing. So I’m pretty sure it’s working. Okay, I did…

You Can’t Fault Them……….sigh…..

You Can’t Fault Them……….sigh…..

Animals are animals. Beasts are beasts.  You can’t expect them to behave differently than Mother Nature intended.  (I’ll throw humans in that animal category as well.) But a person can intervene and try to alter the outcomes. And here we are AGAIN—–with the dead electric fencing………….. One of our clever (stupid) dairy goats somehow got into the backyard yesterday. Not the best of choices.  Not a choice that reinforces her personal longevity. Now enter seven…

Electric Fence Extravaganza

Electric Fence Extravaganza

The water’s subsided enough that we (I) can get into the back pasture. Our fencing is still a mess from Hurricane Irma.  An incredible mess… Ideally we have four “hot” strands with the second from the top being non-electrified.  I don’t know the logic to that, we just followed directions of much more experienced draft horse people when we first put the fence in. Maybe it’s because IF you’re nimble enough, you can go through the fencing at any location…

Stalag Coop—–#3

Stalag Coop—–#3

So what do you do? You drop back and punt. How to make a nude-sunbathing porch now a re-purposed chicken coop into a safe, raccoon-free, opossum-free chicken sanctuary? We had the answer and it was just a matter of some adjunct wiring from the horse’s electric pasture fencing. We have a whopper of a fence charger. Really packs a punch………don’t I know (I get regular, unscheduled chiropractic adjustments from it). So with a little addition of some insulators and some…
