Musings of Breeding and Raising Goats on the Farm

Professor Dillamond Can’t Pee

Professor Dillamond Can’t Pee

  Pascal, I need to remind you…….this is a farm blog…….with posts that would probably not be acceptable as party conversations… This is probably going to be one of those entries…   We are a small homesteading farm… We have a variety of self-sustaining (HA!) animals and participants.   We have two buck goats who have a job to do.         One Boer meat goat buck (Optimus Prime) and one Oberhasli dairy goat buck (Professor Dillamond). We’ve…

Sweetie Got Out!!!

Sweetie Got Out!!!

Sweetie Got Out! Sweetie Got Out!! SWEETIE GOT OUT!!!     I really hate being the one where the buck stops……….       You know the expression……………..”The Buck Stops Here”? Well, apparently there’s a big “X” tattooed on my forehead… I have a list of things that rattle me… Some are extremely obvious, some don’t make sense at all…     (……….like those swarms of those little black beetle bugs that were in my bed a few springs ago………..)…

The Billy Goats Go To Market

The Billy Goats Go To Market

  With help from my family, we took half of the goats intended for sale to the butchers.   I don’t think I posted about the last time I went to the butchers…………….       What a debacle! After I had dropped off the goats, I started to return home with the empty cage in the bed of my truck. Who would have guessed that the shade cloth (zip-tied on the top of the cage) would have acted like…

Dairy Goats Are Butt Heads

Dairy Goats Are Butt Heads

    ~~~~~When I was young, we had sheep on our farm in Ohio~~~~~ But (for at least) the past twenty years, we have had dairy goats… I’ve already explained my old rationale of not wanting my children drinking Posilac-laced, store-bought milk…………….(it’s worth a computer search—–it really is.) Don’t get me going on my Monsanto-rant. ………………….Round-Up, GMO’s, Agent-Orange………………….. Nobody wants to hear that again……………….     That company just begs for it………………I’ll throw Bayer Corporation under the bus too…………….(they bought…
More Baby Goats?
More Baby Goats?
  I’m not sure how this happened… Well, no………………I do know “how” this happened. I did take Biology #101… ………………..but there have been welded metal horse panels between the does and the bucks for quite a while now……………?……………. Horse panels have rectangular openings that are 2″ by 4″, and they are 5′ tall.   I would have thought that the welded metal panel apertures would have been adequately small enough to act as a chastity-belt of sorts to stop “that…
It’s A Jungle Out There
It’s A Jungle Out There
    Geez, Louise!!! I survived the barn chores this morning……….with one, sprained ankle and a bleeding, semi-broken nose.   Oh, and one goat life saved (maybe). Let me explain……………………………………… It’s now the rainy season.  That means there are a lot of fast-moving, electrical storms in our area on the west coast of Florida. In order to get the chores done, you have to dodge the storms and move fast. Which is what I thought I was doing…………………deftly & quickly……
Goats, Hoo Hoo & Basic Addition
Goats, Hoo Hoo & Basic Addition
Just got back inside from bottle feeding several baby goats.  There are quite a few baby goats out there…………….quite a few. Definitely, one of the doelings will be named Irma. We normally have better herd management.   We normally know who is pregnant and when they are due.   All that went out the window when Irma blew through.       And given the goatie-population explosion out there, we need to get our adult goats interested in some other…
More Fence Repair & Fresh Disasters………..
More Fence Repair & Fresh Disasters………..
  Well, I didn’t go Hunting today.  More necessary/mandatory/immediate fence repair was absolutely necessary. A day late and a dollar short.   Here’s a disclaimer.  This is a farm blog.  Not all posts can be humorous. Some are heart-breaking. With farms come births and deaths.  Sowing and reaping.  Planting and discing.  Circles.  Lots of cycles. So, remember how I fixed the front mare’s fencing, but ran out of daylight and hadn’t fixed the back yet.  I had located where the…
You Can’t Fault Them……….sigh…..
You Can’t Fault Them……….sigh…..
            Animals are animals. Beasts are beasts.  You can’t expect them to behave differently than Mother Nature intended.  (I’ll throw humans in that animal category as well.) But a person can intervene and try to alter the outcomes. And here we are AGAIN—–with the dead electric fencing………….. One of our clever (stupid) dairy goats somehow got into the backyard yesterday. Not the best of choices.  Not a choice that reinforces her personal longevity. Now enter seven…
Electric Fence Extravaganza
Electric Fence Extravaganza
The water’s subsided enough that we (I) can get into the back pasture. Our fencing is still a mess from Hurricane Irma.  An incredible mess… Ideally we have four “hot” strands with the second from the top being non-electrified.  I don’t know the logic to that, we just followed directions of much more experienced draft horse people when we first put the fence in. Maybe it’s because IF you’re nimble enough, you can go through the fencing at any location…
