Waging War On Robber Bees

Waging War On Robber Bees

I’ve taken on the battle… I will win this war… I will… …..but whenever I feed sugar-syrup to my hives, I’ve discovered that they are almost immediately under attack from other, wild honey bees (no doubt subsequent generations from my past, absconded hive residents). However if left unchecked, an organized robber bee horde can clean out any residential bee hive very, very quickly. …….and everybody gets into a very, very bad mood……. I had a planned game strategy this week…

Grumpy Bees

Grumpy Bees

Did you know that honey bees get grumpy on cloudy days? And don’t plan on opening their hive when it’s raining…….it would be rude and they would make sure you regretted it. I’m getting into stride with my regular hive-care. Our rainy season is here in sub-tropical Florida. I had forgotten about the “grumpy-bee syndrome”……………..but they enthusiastically reminded me of it. They are happy bees when it is sunny (not too windy)-(no rain)-(no clouds)………………like I said, sunny……….

The Value Of A Marble

The Value Of A Marble

The Value of a Marble…   Often it’s the small things in life that make the world go around… Quite often it’s easy to miss them…   Some can’t be seen, but they can be important and pivotal… A drop of lavender oil on a light bulb. ┬áThe paperclip that holds up the fly on your favorite jeans. A prayer, a thought, a thank you.     Here’s one that helped so much recently…   A marble……….in my hives. My…

Queen Bee

Queen Bee

Everyone says beekeeping is so easy… They say things like:   ***You just have to get used to it…   ***It’ll become second nature with time…       ***With practice it’ll be easy to tell the difference between worker bees, new worker bees, drones, & the Queen…     “They” say these things while they’re sitting on lawn chairs in the middle of their bee yard while wearing bikinis and speedos…   HA! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s NOT easy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here:…

Back to the Bees

Back to the Bees

We’re coming up to Week #2. ┬áThe beasles still haven’t absconded. They’re still here! They’re super busy……………(I love saying this——-wait for it——-here it comes…) You know……………..busy as bees… Okay, it wasn’t as funny that time… Yesterday I installed appropriately-made, hive-entrance reducers. I’m sure my cut up quarter-round scrap wood was doing just fine. But if the bees leave, I’d like to think I did everything right this time…     (No thanks to Monsanto/Bayer.)     Like I said…

Swilling Tea & Watching Bees

Swilling Tea & Watching Bees

What a great way to start the day… I wandered to the back with my first cup of tea to where the hives are… Of course, I had to navigate around a multitude of dog-bombs on the ground in various degrees of disintegration.     Plus I had to maneuver around the Wolfhounds themselves (the ones who produced the bombs)……………all of whom wanted to trip me up and steal my tea………………..bad beasties!   Having successfully made it to the…

My Bees Are Here…..My Bees Are Home!!!

My Bees Are Here…..My Bees Are Home!!!

All of the pre-prep has been done. My head has healed (I think), but there’s a new divot in it now.   I’ve been up in the hayloft collecting supers. I was in the back of the wagon shed pulling out frames and brood boxes.     My younger daughter and I have been brushing off and dusting off and generally cleaning all of the doo-dahs that the honey bees will need in their spacious new homes here. The…

One Tomato in Twenty Years

One Tomato in Twenty Years

I’m good with livestock. I’ve found I excel with poultry. I’ve inherited my father’s abilities in breeding horses. Irish Wolfhounds drip off the trees here. But I have a black thumb where gardening is involved………..a really necrotic thumb. Why?! I’ve asked. Why?! No answers have drifted down from the gardening gods in the sky. I’ve tried regular gardens……..nope. I’ve tried raised beds with special soils………nope. I’ve tried container gardens (old leaky 75 gallon livestock troughs that I thought would be…
