~~~New Piggles~~~
~~~New Piggles~~~

Apparently Mother Earth has deemed this to be Springtime… Even though it’s the beginning of February…..yesterday, I discovered that Sweetie (our now-not-quite-so-feral-sow) had presented me with a new litter of piglets. ~~~Seven~~~ I have no idea who are girls and who are boys——-AND I’m not going to venture into their pen to get more personal and find out…..besides it’s irrelevant at this point & it’s their private business anyway…….plus…….I value all of my fingers and limbs…        …

And This Little Piggy………….

And This Little Piggy………….

  Prior to Suzanne-Annette’s encounter with the Florida Panther a couple of days ago……. A couple of days before that, I had a big surprise. It was a backyard encounter with a sizeable herd of wild pigs……. Usually I find myself defending this farm in my underwear or pajamas…….at least this time I was fully clothed.  Patrice was faithfully at my side…….so there’s a plus……. It was in the broad daylight of mid-afternoon…….no sneaking around in the dark of night…

Sweetie Got Out!!!

Sweetie Got Out!!!

Sweetie Got Out! Sweetie Got Out!! SWEETIE GOT OUT!!!     I really hate being the one where the buck stops……….       You know the expression……………..”The Buck Stops Here”? Well, apparently there’s a big “X” tattooed on my forehead… I have a list of things that rattle me… Some are extremely obvious, some don’t make sense at all…     (……….like those swarms of those little black beetle bugs that were in my bed a few springs ago………..)…

They Worked It Out!!!

They Worked It Out!!!

  After two years (at least) our feral sow and our domestic boar have finally worked “things” out…     I almost think it was the same subconscious pressure that we put on the rabbits to reproduce that caused the pigs to decide that now was the time to have babies.     We had already talked to a new butcher… Our original plan was to have reproducing hogs so that we could raise our own suckling pigs.   But…

Pig Furniture

Pig Furniture

  Pigs like mud right? Well if that’s the case, then they should be happy……….well, happy as a pig in……………………………………….mud… This summer has produced some spectacular mud… So much mud… Both pig pens seem to be teeming in their own, never-ending supply of mud-pie, gloopy, muddy sludge. As far as I can tell, the piggies like the mud, but it makes feeding and watering them difficult. They have a propensity for standing in their water troughs and feed troughs. No…

You Know You’re Tired When………..

You Know You’re Tired When………..

    Got up.  Dealt with bounding house animals. Checked tea pot for left-over tea.  Started new kettle.  Washed out tea pot while nuking left-over tea from yesterday.  Thought about composting tea bags.  Decided not to (again).  Dealt with newly-found dirty dishes in sink.  It’s magic how they materialize after midnight. Used hot water to clean gathered eggs found in a pail by the sink (that one’s on me, I left them there).  Lined up cleaned eggs to air-dry on…

Farm Jargon

Farm Jargon

I never really thought about all of the agro-phrases that we use every day until I actively got back into farm life again about twenty-five years ago.  So many.  The first one I came across applied so well—“Don’t cry over spilled milk”.  It had nothing to do with tipping over a glass on the kitchen table, or dropping the quart container on the floor after opening the fridge.  Nope.  It was when a filthy cloven hoof stepped in your stainless…
