51 Chicks

51 Chicks

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* They’re here….. They came from a Minnesota hatchery via overnight service with the United States Postal Service….. And bright and early…they were waiting for us at our main post office….. I only ordered forty-two chicks(?)………….(and honestly…that was too many)….. …..but the hatchery delivered more………….they actually sent fifty-two….. And to date…fifty-one are peeping around…fluffy…cute…hale & hearty…and loud….. …..the one little chick that didn’t make it…died within the first forty-eight hours…I don’t know why…(true to…

Chicken Wire Repair

Chicken Wire Repair

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Repairs around a farm are a revolving To Do List….. You can’t expect it’s ever going to be a completed list….. The best you can hope for is a list that’s semi under control….. Because sure as the day is long…there’s going to be a fresh disaster…which requires immediate attention…and quickly gets graduated to the Top of the List….. We have some fairly decent poultry coops here on the farm…they aren’t the of…

~How To Confuse Your Chicken~

~How To Confuse Your Chicken~

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Terms like “chicken headed” easily come to mind….. Chickens are not deep introspective creatures…… They would not be your first poultry choice to have on a debate team….. They are always predictively and consistently simple….. However…reliably…every Spring…some of the hens (but not all) become “broody”….. *****(Definition of Broodiness)***** They insist on sitting on eggs…anyone’s and everyone’s eggs….. You can watch them carefully use their beak to roll an egg out from underneath a…

*Duckling Arrival*

a*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* My recent baby poultry order is in two parts….. The bulk of my order is baby chickens…and they will arrive towards the end of July….. But I also ordered a few baby Runner Ducks (three)…because everyone needs Runner Ducks….. …..and they arrived this week….. I also got a few duck eggs that I sneaked under my broody hens…(won’t they be surprised when (if) they hatch)….. But I didn’t want to leave the responsibility…

Old Biddies

Old Biddies

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* I just looked up the term “biddies”…and the vast universe of the all-knowing computer world says that biddies are baby chicks….. I’ve always heard the term referring to adult hens…usually older cranky hens…hens that are set in their ways….. Really…what does the computer know anyway?….. I’m going to stick with my old Ohio colloquialisms…biddies are bustling bodacious old broads….. …..take that…you omnipotent Internet….. But our biddies are doing what biddies do…in the Springtime……..

*When In Doubt…More Chicks, Please*

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* I’ve ordered more chickens…(to be specific…recently hatched baby chicks)….. They’re all different named breeds….. …..(and they all have pretty colored egg shells)….. I’ve probably ordered more than I should have………….I’m quite sure I did….. …..(you’d be surprised how much baby chicks cost these days)….. But like I’ve said before…I don’t do designer clothes or Prada shoes….. I do land….. And apparently…I buy chickens too….. I’ve bought chicks from this hatchery for many years……..

~Eggs…Eggs…and More Eggs~

~Eggs…Eggs…and More Eggs~

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Yep…the chicken ladies have definitely cranked up their egg production….. They stand in lines outside the laying boxes…every day now….. The other day I picked up forty-three eggs…(43)…(!)….. My younger daughter swore that she had picked them all up the day before…(but I really don’t think so)….. By my count…we are averaging between eighteen and twenty-ish eggs a day….. We give eggs to our neighbors and friends….. The only thing we have a…

Farm Repair Update

Farm Repair Update

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** We’ve been working hard on the farm…the outside weather still remains tolerable-ish….. But sunstroke…dehydration…are just around the corner once again….. General exposure to the sun in our sub-tropical hostile environment…(which we lovingly call a Florida Summer)…is almost here………….(Yippee!)….. But there’s always a lot that needs to be done…regardless of the heat….. We’ve gotten all the gate repair done…(plus I’ve got a good inventory of spare gates–for the big limbs that are just waiting…

Another Showdown

Another Showdown

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* It’s hard to tell one opossum from another opossum….. But I think this is a different one…because he (or she) was bigger…his fur was healthier and smoother…and there wasn’t a hitch in his get-along….. Regardless…the other night…I was called out of my bed and into action to protect my poultry…(yet again)….. There is definitely a repeat pattern here…it always at night…after everyone has gone to bed…and I’m always in my underwear or my…

…And The Seasons Change…

…And The Seasons Change…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* It seems like the Holidays were just the other day….. But suddenly…there’s a light green haze showing up on the tree branches…and the sun’s rays have changed angles and everything suddenly seems more Spring-like….. What has really started to make the approach of Spring more obvious here is the uptick of egg production….. All the hens are beginning to lay with more regularity….. We’ve had the good fortune of having eggs all year…
