Waging War On Robber Bees

Waging War On Robber Bees

I’ve taken on the battle… I will win this war… I will… …..but whenever I feed sugar-syrup to my hives, I’ve discovered that they are almost immediately under attack from other, wild honey bees (no doubt subsequent generations from my past, absconded hive residents). However if left unchecked, an organized robber bee horde can clean out any residential bee hive very, very quickly. …….and everybody gets into a very, very bad mood……. I had a planned game strategy this week…

~~~Bee Death Up-Date~~~
~~~Bee Death Up-Date~~~

  My bees seem to be okay… (…..even with the tower of brood boxes almost falling over on me in our recent maritally-debacled attempt to lift the hives up higher.) But globally there’s a BIG problem brewing with the world’s honey bees and the Monarch Butterflies too… *****Record Number Of Honey Bee Death***** I’m hoping my little country-bumpkin bees will be able to avoid pesticide poisonings, damage from the microwave towers,  and/or confusion from a potential pole-shift… As much as…

Dorian Approacheth…..

Dorian Approacheth…..

The spaghetti models are running amuck… We are all feeling whiplashed by that stupid pasta… Our favorite meteorologist is looking haggard… My stomach acids are typically/seasonally churning away just like the hurricanes… Dorian is gaining strength over the very warm waters in the tropics… We are all watching the hinging-point of where he will ultimately make landfall……. …….there is a high-pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean that will determine when Dorian makes a turn from going to the west…….to heading…

“Dorian” (et al) & The Bees

“Dorian” (et al) & The Bees

****NOAA’s Atlantic Update***** What was dry in December, is not dry now… What was dry in March, is not dry now… The same in June… And most of July… But not now.   When I set up the bee hives, I picked a “higher” spot in the goat pasture…….(let’s face it—–the goat pasture is synonymous with “the back swamp”.)…….(“swamp” being the operative word) I even put the hives up on two cement blocks. But even without a hurricane, we are…

Just Another Day…

Just Another Day…

  Today started out the way most days start out… I got cracked on the head when I was dumping feed into the buckets for the drafts.   Addy was so excited about her breakfast, that she swung her head up over mine, trying to get to her meal faster. She successfully hit me in the head with her cement-like-jawbone… Immediately after that, I had to medicate Claire’s legs from where the summer flies have created a couple of weeping…

Grumpy Bees

Grumpy Bees

      Did you know that honey bees get grumpy on cloudy days? And don’t plan on opening their hive when it’s raining…….it would be rude and they would make sure you regretted it. I’m getting into stride with my regular hive-care. Our rainy season is here in sub-tropical Florida. I had forgotten about the “grumpy-bee syndrome”……………..but they enthusiastically reminded me of it. They are happy bees when it is sunny (not too windy)-(no rain)-(no clouds)………………like I said, sunny……….

The Value Of A Marble

The Value Of A Marble

The Value of a Marble…   Often it’s the small things in life that make the world go around… Quite often it’s easy to miss them…   Some can’t be seen, but they can be important and pivotal… A drop of lavender oil on a light bulb.  The paperclip that holds up the fly on your favorite jeans. A prayer, a thought, a thank you.     Here’s one that helped so much recently…   A marble……….in my hives. My…

Queen Bee

Queen Bee

Everyone says beekeeping is so easy… They say things like:   ***You just have to get used to it…   ***It’ll become second nature with time…       ***With practice it’ll be easy to tell the difference between worker bees, new worker bees, drones, & the Queen…     “They” say these things while they’re sitting on lawn chairs in the middle of their bee yard while wearing bikinis and speedos…   HA! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s NOT easy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here:…

Back to the Bees

Back to the Bees

  We’re coming up to Week #2.  The beasles still haven’t absconded. They’re still here! They’re super busy……………(I love saying this——-wait for it——-here it comes…) You know……………..busy as bees… Okay, it wasn’t as funny that time… Yesterday I installed appropriately-made, hive-entrance reducers. I’m sure my cut up quarter-round scrap wood was doing just fine. But if the bees leave, I’d like to think I did everything right this time…     (No thanks to Monsanto/Bayer.)     Like I said…

Swilling Tea & Watching Bees

Swilling Tea & Watching Bees

  What a great way to start the day… I wandered to the back with my first cup of tea to where the hives are… Of course, I had to navigate around a multitude of dog-bombs on the ground in various degrees of disintegration.     Plus I had to maneuver around the Wolfhounds themselves (the ones who produced the bombs)……………all of whom wanted to trip me up and steal my tea………………..bad beasties!   Having successfully made it to the…
