Farmers never want and/or need a surplus of roosters…..

Roosters are valuable…..but you don’t need multiple/crowing birds…..

…..they fight…..they do that early morning crowing-thing (try 3:30am)…..(in what world is that dawn?)…..they harass the hens…..

…..they’re basically loud  &  disruptive…..

…..plus some stupid (short-lived birds) try to chase & spur you…..

I try to keep our rooster population to a minimum…..just a couple of very happy boys…..

I keep giant breed chickens…..for the simple reason…..they produce giant eggs…..

…..(why bother with bantams…..(?)…..you only get bantam-sized eggs from diminutive/squeaky birds)…..

…..it’s just “housewife-logic”…..

The chicken and turkey coops are just off my bedroom window…..

Apparently…..dawn comes earlier on that side of the house…..

The other day…..I started counting the morning crowing…..

…..in my morning-haze…..I counted more than the accounted for roosters that I knew were in our coop…..

We’ve got Rex Goliath (our Blue-Laced Red Wyandotte)…..Caesar (of unknown breeding)-(but he’s pretty & I like him)-(and he takes good care of the hens)…..

…..and there’s an extra/purebred French Black Maran rooster (who I purchased by mistake)…..(I had thought I was buying a French Black Copper Maran)…..(really there’s a huge difference)…..

…..and then there’s Guillaume (the actual French Black Copper Maran rooster)…..

BUT…..I’ve discovered there are at least three…(tres…3…III…trois…) EXTRA roosters who have shown up on our property…..???…..!!!…..WWWHHHAAATTT!?!…..

…..that means some sneaky farmer got fed-up with their over-population of noisy roosters and dumped their extras on our property…..

I’ve identified three newbies…..

…..it’s easy to tell…..we don’t have any white-feathered roosters…..and these guys are splattered with white feathers…..

I have my ideas on where they came from…..

There’s a house up the road who just started selling eggs and recently put signs up to that effect…..

My bet is…..it’s them…..(the bastards)…..

Feuds have been started for far less than this…..

Somewhere in the not too distant future…..I’ll round up all of the surplus rooster…..and take them to the auction…..

…..it will probably be sooner rather than later…..

…..my cacophonous-mornings (3:30am) have become unbearable…..
