Where Have All The Eggs Gone?…

Where Have All The Eggs Gone?…

I Find Chicken Eggs Hidden In The Darndest Places

We have a ten compartment laying box for all the hens in our chicken coop.

It’s old, but it functions.

I’ve got comfortable/astro-turf bases for each of the compartments

There’s an upper level and a lower level…….

………each with a full-length perch running along the outside from end to end for easy…………well…………perching…

Their nesting/laying boxes are safely & securely attached to the wall on the inside of their coop.

It’s cooler in there…

It’s safer in there…

It’s out of the sun…

It’s the best choice of places to lay eggs…

And yet……………..

……………….what do a great many of the biddies do?

They seek out other much-less-safe, less-comfortable places to lay their eggs…

Dumb birds…….

Dumb, tiny-brained birds

I find them in all sort of strange places……………..

……….or I don’t find them at all…………….ever again…

That Poof Of Feathers~~~~~~~This Was The Sign Of An Ex-Chicken

……….sometimes I find that tell-tale “poof” of a circle of feathers…

……….that’s never good…

The Blue & Turquoise Eggs Are Eggs From An Americana Chicken

The silly hens that I loose the most seem to be the Americanas.  They are described as “jungle-fowl”.

I figure that they have a propensity in their DNA to want to wander off into the swamp (or jungle)………

………..well I’m here to say that is probably the last bad choice that they ever make.

They need to stay close to our Stalag-Coop.

It has everything installed to keep them safe (especially over night).

Our swamps around here are just stocked full of hungry critters…

I found the odiferous remains of an Americana hen (I think) in the barn last week………..the crows perched on the stall walls were the tip off……….the odor-trail was easy to follow…….

She had looked prettier a few days earlier……….

Silly hen…

Then yesterday I found another Americana hen that “neglected” to return to the coop overnight……………..again not a good choice………………I’d seen her look better too…

Why can’t all the chickens just read the box-game directions.

The rules are simple.

Lay your eggs in the coop AND come back home at night…

Poor, dumb birds…….

  1. This is a dead chicken. It has passed on. This chicken is no more. It has ceased to be. It has expired and gone to see its’ maker. This is a late chicken. It is bereft of life. If you hadn’t nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up daisies. It’s rolled down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex chicken. Monty Python
