We don’t have a mulberry bush…we have a mulberry tree…..

Normally it bears fruit prolifically…..

The squirrels…crows…and general bird population…and ME do battle to collect the berries…..

This year was no exception…with regard to the quantity of mulberries…..

…..but the foliage is not right…..

There’s a lot of fruit…but the leaves feel dry and they are curled at the edges…..

They aren’t falling off…but they are sparser than usual…and they sure aren’t happy leaves…..

…..and unfortunately…that is about the sum total of my horticultural abilities…..

…..I am NOT a proficient gardener…I’m good with poultry…I can make anything lay an egg…..

I’ve tried to do research…I’ve asked plant people…I’ve looked up stuff online…..

…..it could be nematodes…(really not good…if that’s the case)…or maybe some sooty fungus(?)…..

I don’t know…..

But Doctor Brigid came by…and we walked past the mulberry tree…and I asked her what she thought…..

The fruit tasted watery compared to past years…and its poor leaves looked pathetic…..

Originally Doctor Brigid was the person who had given me the tree to plant a number of years ago…and it was doing quite well…for a very long time…..

…..except for recently…..

Being the voice of reason…she suggested…it needed more water…..

…..hmmmmm…..

Well…this is the dry season…and this is also the time when the tree is also making mulberries…..

She said the tree looked stressed…..

At their house…they run the hose on their mulberry tree about three times a week…..

…..hmmmmm…I haven’t done that at all…(poor tree)…..

So I started running the hose every other day…I can’t tell if it’s helping…..

But my younger daughter and I are also hauling a boo-koodle amount of poultry and rabbit manure and dumping it all around the tree…..

The chickens are helping us spread the piles of poo…..

…..it’s a win—win situation…..

The chickens think it’s great fun…and we get the manure spread…..

I’m hoping this fixes our tree…it’s really a beautiful tree…I’d hate to loose it…..

Maybe the fertilizer and water will do the trick…..

…..that would be wonderful…..
