*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Terms like “chicken headed” easily come to mind….. Chickens are not deep introspective creatures…… They would not be your first poultry choice to have on a debate team….. They are always predictively and consistently simple….. However…reliably…every Spring…some of the hens (but not all) become “broody”….. *****(Definition of Broodiness)***** They insist on sitting on eggs…anyone’s and everyone’s eggs….. You can watch them carefully use their beak to roll an egg out from underneath a…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* Yep…the chicken ladies have definitely cranked up their egg production….. They stand in lines outside the laying boxes…every day now….. The other day I picked up forty-three eggs…(43)…(!)….. My younger daughter swore that she had picked them all up the day before…(but I really don’t think so)….. By my count…we are averaging between eighteen and twenty-ish eggs a day….. We give eggs to our neighbors and friends….. The only thing we have a…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* ~~~~~Try My Posts on SubStack/Click Here~~~~~ Mister Possum is still in the neighborhood….. …..he’s now considering our little homestead his tromping grounds….. Even as possums go…he’s nasty looking….. …..he’s been around the block a few times…tripped off the curb…gotten run over…but he keeps coming up swinging….. I’ve got to admire his chutzpah…I’ll give him that….. …..but he’s a flea-bitten limping geriatric nuisance….. And I can’t shoot him….. …..because Doctor Brigid said so….. He’s…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* First………….here’s a little up-date….. …..No Snakes have been found in our house (or my lingerie drawer)….. …..No Snakes have been found in or around Doctor Brigid’s car….. …..No identifiable carcass smells have wafted up in the good doctor’s car…or from under our couch….. …..so that’s a Win–Win?–(Right?)….. There was an instance two days ago…when Danny (my younger daughter’s Papillon)…started barking his face off at something that was under her bed….. I thought that…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* We’re thinking something might not be right with our incubator….. This last attempt at hatching eggs was not very successful….. A few brave souls made it through the hatching process…but not many….. My younger daughter and I were able to successfully save another struggling chick-let….. So far…everyone who tried to break out of their shells were able to…(but there were so many who didn’t make it to that stage)….. I’m sure it had…

Hatching Eggs

Hatching Eggs

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** When I started this round of eggs in the incubator…it was a combination of mostly duck eggs with some accompanying chicken eggs….. Duck eggs typically take 28 days to hatch…chicken eggs take about 21….. Surprise…you silly old woman…(she says to herself)…do the math….. If you put them in together…I don’t know…maybe the chicken eggs will hatch first(?)…by about a week(?)….. …..and that’s what’s been happening….. I’ve had four little chicks hatch…and they’re now…

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** Every night we count the ducks who have returned to the chicken coop…before shutting the door for the night….. The Runner ducks are always the last to come in………….they have a very busy social calendar….. There isn’t much longevity expected for any of the poultry who don’t return to the coop….. It’s too hard to count the chickens…there are too many…and they are more reliable when it comes to returning to the coop…

**********Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps********** Today is Labor Day….. It’s the unofficial beginning of Autumn….. There’s hope that cooler weather might be right around the corner….. …..but I won’t hold my breath….. There are three tropical “somethings” out in the Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico/& the Atlantic….. Today…we won’t think about those things….. We’re taking today as easy as possible…which is the national intention for this day….. We’re using the cooker-smoker to barbecue chicken and roast corn for a…

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* We’ve had to re-arrange our Runner Ducks….. …..they’ve become………….overly amorous….. I’ve mentioned before that Runner Ducks are “seasonal layers”…by that I mean they don’t lay eggs all year ’round…only in the Springtime….. And one could assume that “fertilizing” the eggs would only need to occur seasonally as well….. Ha!………….tell that to the drakes….. …..randy little dudes….. I mean…It’s mid-June…Springtime is almost over….. They should be hanging up their propensity for procreating pretty soon……..

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps******* We’re not even at the longest day of the year yet….. We’ve got another three weeks to go…and the days will keep getting longer until the Summer Solstice….. But all the animals here are on dawn-to-dusk schedule…well…all except for the ducks….. For being so vulnerable to predacious wildness out here…they really do push the envelope….. The Runner Ducks are the farm’s weeble-wobbles….. …..they can’t run fast (their name is a misnomer)…they can’t fly…(they’ve…
