We’re lucky…..

We don’t have much in the way of allergies…..

But this time of year is the bane of a lot of people’s existence…the oak trees are in bloom…..

The above link explains it all…right down to the anatomy of those dreaded “catkins”…(which until a couple minutes ago…I didn’t know what they were called)…..

Florida has a wonderful variety of Oaks…..

There are Water Oaks…and Sand Live Oaks…and Red Oaks…and Laurel Oaks…just to name a few…..

My favorite is the Live Oak…they live a long long time…they can get really huge…and they have so much character…..

…..you can just sit back and imagine little grungies and elves and pixies hiding in their limbs and roots…..

But for those who are sensitive to tree pollen…this time of the year…is a misery…..

My daughters and I sneeze a couple times…and that’s about it…..

Some of my friends turn into red-eyed…coughing…dripping messes…..

…..with itchy eyes…and dysfunctional lives…until the pollen-season is over…..

I feel badly for them…and a little guilty…because we can skate through this season almost symptom-free…..

…..the worst of it for us…is to remember NOT to turn on the windshield wipers in any vehicle until we’re above forty miles per hour…..

…..that way the wind has had a chance to blow off most of the blossoms (catkins) and pollen…BEFORE…trying to wash the windshield…..

Otherwise…all you’ve done is create pollen-putty…which is impossible to see through while driving…..

We pluck the “catkins” out of each other’s hair and off our clothing…and carry on with business as usual…..

And that’s pretty much it…..

But at this time of year…everything is covered in yellow fluffy dusty pollen…..

Forget rose-colored glasses………….everything is pollen-coated down here…..

But it will all be gone with a couple good rains………….people will stop hacking and spewing and dribbling…..

…..and life will get back to normal again…..
