I’m learning from my older daughter through symbiosis…..

Who said…”Necessity was the Mother of Invention”?…..

I’m not sure…but they’re right…..

Long ago…I learned to step to the side with my daughters…and let them learn on their own…..

I tried not to impede them when they were little…..

I’d grab sharp objects out of their hands as they’d motor past…

…..what parent doesn’t?…..

But I tried to let them explore independently as much as possible…..

Now…it’s a little different…the sharp objects aren’t as easy to spot…plus now I’m learning from my children too…..

And that’s what’s currently happening…..

My older daughter has become a fix-it/grease-monkey…she’s learning all sorts of repair skills from YouTube videos…..

My Father and my Grandfather and my Uncle could have really taught her a great deal…they would have enjoyed her as an apprentice…..

A rural Ohio farm in the fifties and sixties had a lot of things break and a lot of things that needed repair…..

…..silk stockings for temporary engine fan belts…chewing gum over small radiator holes…fixing treadle sewing machine fly wheels with rubber bands…milk bottle caps hanging on strings to keep the crows out of the sweet corn…..

They were supposed to be temporary fixes…but some of them were so good…they became permanent…..

Sadly…there were too many years between their generations…..

But my daughter’s a very quick study…..

…..and we have a small farm…in the twenty-first century…with a lot of things breaking…..

I watch most of her body disappear inside an engine…or her feet sticking out from behind the tires…..

She has her phone propped up next to her in the deep recesses of whatever vehicle she’s working on…and I can hear her voice having a one way conversation with her phone’s favorite YouTuber…..

Sometimes her conversations are tirades…sometimes they’re shouted “Ah Ha” moments…I really worry when I hear large sparks…and all that follows is—“It’s okay, Mom…the screwdriver’s got a wooden handle”…..

…..(Lordy George)…..

But the tractor is almost fixed…my truck took priority…and we’re just hoping that any hurricanes stay away (at least) until the generator’s carburetor can be cleaned…..

My Dad would be baffled by cell phones…and certainly by YouTube…..

…..One of my Dad’s famous quotes was: “There’s Nothing Of Interest For Me On The Internet”…..

But he sure would be proud of his granddaughter…..
