Montana (our Blacksmith) came out recently…to trim Claire’s & Anja’s hooves…..

He trimmed Anja’s hooves without any issues…..

We put Claire in the shoeing stock…dosed her with some sub-lingual Dormosedan/happy-gel…(there are days I want some of that blue-goo)…..

*****(Dormosedan Defined)*****

We cranked up the newly-lubricated and un-frozen Come-Along…..

Come-Along Hooks

…..by that time…Claire was so relaxed that she didn’t mind the big dog collars around her fetlocks…with the come-along cranking up her feet…..

…..Claire leaned on the shoeing stock…and she snoozed…..

Her hooves were probably a little better…but just barely…(hoof canker is rarely (if ever) cured)…..

…(a few years ago…when we first got Claire)…(this is her hind left)…

Montana used our angle-grinder to cut off the excessive hoof growth…..

…..smoke was everywhere from burning keratin…..

…(Claire’s hoof wall…not the way a healthy hoof wall should look)…

…..there was no bleeding because he cut off non-vascularized hoof-growth…..

Claire (à la Dormosedan) blissfully didn’t care that she was surrounded by smoke from her own hooves…..

…(Montana and Claire)…

Montana pared as much excess-growth off as possible…(he even burned out the motor of my angle-grinder)…..

It’s not so much a winning situation for Claire…it’s more a maintaining situation…..

Hoof canker is a weird condition…we have no idea when and/or where she contracted it (in ALL of her hooves)…..

Claire has a secret past all her own…..

I pointed out a newly draining abscess on the outside of Claire’s hind hoof…it was high up on the coronary band…..

My older daughter and I have been alternating irrigating it with colloidal silver and chlorhexidine…..

Not Claire’s hoof…but the coronary band is where the hoof meets the leg hair…

…..it looks like it’s healing and closing…she’s never been lame on it…and her temperature’s been fine(?)…..

Montana was concerned…he said I needed to have Dr. Stevie Wonder (our nickname for our vet) take a look at it…..

…the bottom of Claire’s left hind hoof when she first arrived in 2018…
…(same hoof now)…(not good…but better)…

Poor Claire has had a rough life…she’s been here since 2018…at least she’s had a full belly since then…with good food…and no work………….(sigh)…..

Claire & Brave

………….(to be continued)………….

*****(Note To Self:—get another angle-grinder)*****
