More Bufo Toads
I found another one of those nasty boogers…..
He/she was hiding out under the goat’s salt block pan…..
When I flipped the pan over to drain out the accumulated rain water…..he just squatted there…..staring at me…..
It must be “that” time of the summer when they are more visibly prevalent…..
Maybe they are preparing for hibernation…..
…..awaiting that one cold day in January…..
They are big heavy toads…
Hard to miss…
Very different than the normal/warty/common toad…
The regular toads are diminutive by comparison…
Our goat-friends around the corner have been collecting them too…
…..but I don’t know how they dispatch their treasure-trove of toads…
…..I still freeze mine…
A strong knot and a double-bagged Walmart shopping bag (without holes) still does the trick without any unnecessary messy clean-up afterwards (or wasted ammunition)…
My older daughter approves…
My concern is…..we have two small dogs here…
My daughters’s Papillon and Jack Russell…
The poison released from the glands on the skin of these toads would be enough to kill them…
………….the toads (aka: Cane Toads) need to go…
I re-home rat snakes or anyone (who’s non-poisonous) and camps out in the coop to breakfast on chicks or eggs…
Anyone else who’s poisonous…….gets ended…
I’m sorry to say…….but it does…
I don’t want to risk the demise of my daughter’s pets…
And I don’t need the resulting/necessary/vet bills to try and save them…
…..as it is…..we are very careful with the (five-pound) Papillon…
…..when Danny goes outside to go potty…..he is on a leash with a secure harness…
…..he would be an easy swoop & snag for a hawk or an owl…
…..both of those birds are big enough to carry him off…
I’m not heartless………….I’m realistic…
I can’t control the flying predators…
But I don’t try to have a symbiotic/kumbaya relationship with the poisonous things…
………….There’s a place for all God’s creatures………….
…..just not on my farm…..
(***We just nabbed another Bufo in the garage…..sitting in Otto’s water dish.***)
