We’re not even at the longest day of the year yet…..

We’ve got another three weeks to go…and the days will keep getting longer until the Summer Solstice…..

But all the animals here are on dawn-to-dusk schedule…well…all except for the ducks…..

For being so vulnerable to predacious wildness out here…they really do push the envelope…..

The Runner Ducks are the farm’s weeble-wobbles…..

…..they can’t run fast (their name is a misnomer)…they can’t fly…(they’ve got ridiculous tiny/ineffective wings)…..

…..and they don’t have the common sense to come into the coop…until right between dusk and total darkness…..

Last night I was ready to go to bed…but I had to wait for the ducks to go to bed first…..

…..when I checked (out the window with a flashlight)…they were all running in a straight line…in the opposite direction…..

The chickens were all in for the night…but not any of the ducks…..

I had to keep checking…at fifteen minute intervals…to see when they finally decided to put themselves to bed…..

In the past…I’ve tried herding the ducks into the coop…and it was like trying to herd cats…..

My older daughter suggested putting special treats in their feed pan in the coop at night…to make it worthwhile for them to waddle into the coop a little earlier…..

I’m trying that…but the ducks are not really food-driven…..

…..they are mud-driven…and water-driven…but special night time snacks…not so much…..

We have our nightly head count here on the farm…everyone is accounted for…before we can go to bed…..

In the past it’s been our geriatric Molly…who’s out wandering aimlessly in the backyard…and we have to coax her into the house…..

Now with Daylight Savings Time and the approaching Summer Solstice…it’s the damned ducks…..

It would be fine waiting for the ducks…if I could make up for it on the other end of a good night’s sleep…..

…..but the nights are so short…and the roosters start crowing even earlier now…..

I wonder what people do in Sweden…trying to get their poultry into the coop at night in the summer…when the sun hardly sets at all(?)…..

I worry about these things…..

I bet nobody gets a good nights sleep…..
