*****(Coyote Description)****

I thought I’d continue this topic…..

Yesterday my friend was going to let her remaining house cat outside…the poor traumatized cat turned around and wouldn’t leave the house…..

My friend flashed a light into her backyard…and just beyond her porch…were a pair of glowing coyote eyes…..

…..They’re Not Leaving…..

*****(A Coyotes Evolving Diet)*****

I’ve done some research…..

Apparently the southeastern United States is ideal for a thriving coyote population…..

Their body size is perfect for the southern heat.  Most people think of the cartoon Wily Coyote when they think of coyotes…..

A lot still think coyotes live primarily out west…..

…..but they are everywhere…they’re smart…they work together as a cohesive pack…and they’re extremely versatile…..

I think my cousins told me they’ve seen them rummaging through garbage cans in Hollywood, California.  I’ve also heard from other friends that coyotes are doing the same thing in northern cities like Pittsburgh and N.Y.C…..

Coyotes are survivors…..

While the above referenced study talks about limited hybridization between coyotes and domestic dogs…..

…..I have this to add…it’s all anecdotal…but it’s interesting…..

My hay-guy from a few years ago had an illuminating story…(fyi—a hay-guy is a guy who delivers hay)…..

H.C. (the hay-guy) said he kept loosing his pig dogs…(fyi—pig dogs are dogs who hunt wild pigs—quite often Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes)…..

H.C. wasn’t able to figure out what was happening…..

…..until…he was hunting on some property with a lot of game-cam’s…..

…..and after he lost yet another pig dog…he was able to review the camera footage…..

What he saw was a local coyote pack approaching his hunting dogs…then sending out one of their females (who was in season)…..

H.C.’s missing male dog tied with the female to breed her…(and while the poor boy was otherwise indisposed)…..

…..the rest of the coyote pack came in and killed him…..

As gruesome and ruthless as that sounds…you have to admit…it took forethought…..

Coyotes are smart…coyotes are incredibly adaptable…..

…..(and dare I say)…Coyotes are Wily…..

I know by the amount of coyotes we give chase to with our Fox Hunt Club that the numbers in our area are increasing…..

*****(More Coyote Because Of Less Wolves)*****

My older daughter’s Biology class at the University said that it was difficult to consistently map coyote DNA because their DNA was so variable from region to region…..

…..probably because of the contributions by H.C.’s pig dog’s (along with other similar occurrences) from pack to pack across the country…..

But…between what H.C. told me and my daughter’s college class…the research papers that I’ve attached do not support this…..

…..(I think I’ll believe my daughter and anecdotal H.C.)…..

I hope the resident coyote pack (that’s currently vexing my neighbor and eating her cats) migrates somewhere else…..

…..(but they won’t if they keep being fed by her unreasonable dim-witted neighbors)…..

*****(Florida’s Urban Coyotes)*****…..(apparently it’s illegal to feed them)…..

*******My friend just found another half-consumed body of someone’s kitten*******
