…..We Were Expecting This…..
*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps*******

I knew this would happen…(don’t worry…we still have fifty-one)…..
I didn’t want to have to deal with this…I’m so tired of snakes…..

Especially hungry snakes…who think I’m here to supply them with a never-ending buffet…..
Forget ***(Snakes On A Plane)***…we’ve got snakes in the house…snakes in the grass…snakes in the barn…snakes under the deck…and now…snakes in the coop…..

No…we haven’t lost any of the fifty-one chicks…(yet)…..
But it really didn’t take the snakes long to slither towards the chicks…did it?…..
Did they smell them?…did they hear them?…how did they know?…..

The whopping big rat snake is still in the barn at Doctor Brigid’s farm…(hopefully)…eating rats…(hopefully)…..
And I haven’t seen any more rat snakes on our property…(yet)……since that fun little happenstance a little while ago…..

But…..
…..recently two corn snakes decided that they absolutely needed to get into the coop where the baby chicks are currently ensconced…..
Why?…..

As far as I know…corn snakes don’t eat chicks…and these snakes were small…(and yes…they were pretty)…but they were also making terribly bad life choices…..
One snake…we were able to save (we think)…while the other one…we were too late to rescue…..

The wiring around the coop (top AND bottom) is comprised of tiny tiny squares…way too small for any snake that would be the size to swallow a chick…..

But somehow these two different corn snakes…on two separate occasions…got into the coop…(somehow)…..
…..and then…they decided to try to crawl back out again through one of those tiny tiny squares…and then…they both got stuck…..

Snake #2 we were able to save…(with the help of a wire cutters)…..
But…Snake #1 got stuck and wedged in one of the tiny tiny squares…..
…..while (unfortunately) the rest of his body was draped over the pulsing electric wire along the bottom edge of the coop (which was put there “to deter” un-welcomed visitors)…(like him)…..

Corn Snake #1 was well and truly stuck………….and dead…..
So rather than cutting more holes in my already multi-patched hardware cloth…..
*****(Is Hardware Cloth Made of Cloth?)*****

I enlisted my handy pocket knife…and cut his head off…and successfully unwound him…post mortem…..
…..poor thing…..
Waste not…want not…..

I put his carcass on an oak tree stump for the hawks to find as an impromptu canapé…..
…..(which they did)…..

While Snake #2…(we hope)…made a clean getaway amongst the potted plants and fruit trees…..
Do I think we’re done with Snake-Duty for this warm season(?)…..

…..Oh!…Hell!…No!…..
We do live in rural Florida…and…we are Swamp adjacent…..

I’m just hoping I can see them three steps before they are directly under foot…..
And I’m hoping my coop repairs safeguard the poultry…..

I’ve always had them—red rat snakes versus yellow rat snakes.
