The Mowing’s Done

The Mowing’s Done

It took three (3) days…

But it’s done…

For the time being…

This Tractor Probably Has Air-Conditioning In Its Cab—I Bet It Even Has A CD-Player

I couldn’t touch any of the metal on the tractor’s chassis while I was out there. ..

The sun was so searing, even at the cooler times of the day…

I couldn’t get off the tractor’s seat for too long, because getting back on would scorch my bottom…

The temperature’s been hanging around 99F degrees…

The afternoon rains are supposed to re-start again later on this week…

But now, without the cooling by the afternoon’s showers, it’s REALLY HOT!

This Isn’t A Cotter Pin, Is It?…………..What Is It Then?

I’m too tired to knock the cotter pins out of the bush hog to detach it…………..

I left it parked in the breezeway of the barn…….I’ll do it later…

……..I just crawled into the house to cool down first…

The Fork-Lift Attachment

I have to re-attach the fork lift so I can take an alfalfa bale out to Mason…

In the last part of the pasture that I mowed, I didn’t see any snakes slithering to safety…

Not A Red-Shouldered Hawk, But You Get The Idea

The red-shouldered hawks were perched on the fence posts waiting and watching to see what I turned up or scared out.

No snakes, just one unfortunate field mouse…

A waiting hawk swooped in and scooped him up with lightening speed…

Again, Not A Red-Shouldered Hawk—But You Get The General Idea

I had to feel bad for the mouse………….but the hawk has to eat too…

I’m also missing one of my tiniest chicks who I put out in the coop………….I think a hawk recently had chicken for dinner…

Unfortunately I discovered a wasp’s nest hidden in one of a gate’s metal crevices…….

*****Note to self:  Go back with wasp spray*****

Paolo & I both did notice that there are more dragonflies this summer…….so that’s really good news…

They’ve been flying around——-so much more so than in the past.

My eyes are blurry and burning from the sweat that trickled into them…….

I hope the weeds and grass take their time re-growing…….

Maybe they’ll wait until cooler weather…….(?)

…….fat chance for that, huh?…….

  1. High end tractors have Sirius XM too. AC has been available, special order, since I was in HS. Now like automatic transmissions in cars, it’s standard on virtually all enclosed tractors. Along with a GPS to help plant exactly where you need to be. Perfectly straight rows. Comfortable seats. Halogen lights that allow you to work late into the night if you want. High end tractor cabs are a lot like long haul semi cabs for a good comparison. Speaking of bugs, you would just love my lightning bug display. I have a lot of them. One of my ratsnakes finally showed . I had 3 that I saw constantly for at least the last 5 years, one lived under my front porch, two in my back shed and a kingsnake who I never saw, but did see a hatchling, which in my old age I was not able to catch. Remember my kingsnake when I was in the Hernando Mtns? Snakes left and I have been at war with field mice. In the summer, rare. I suspect all of the rain we have had, we are having Fla like T-storms, had something to do with it , but the snakes did too good of a job, left and “boom-boom out come the mice”

    1. Do you have a high-end tractor on your farm? We haven’t had fireflies for years. I miss them. I’m hoping they come back with the return of the dragonflies.

        1. What mountains? You were moderately more elevated above sea level than we are when you lived in Hernando………there were no mountains……….it’s Florida………..it’s all just glorified sand dunes…………..BUT, do you know how to attract or feed fire flies/lightening bugs?

          1. Well yeah. It’s Fla. What else do you call the highest points of elevation? Besides, it’s my answer and if I want to call them the Hernando Mtns. I will. (sticks out tongue, because emogies don’t work) If I remember correctly, there is a hill on Kingsway between Dade City and Z ‘hills that is the highest spot in Fla. I’m pretty sure lightning bugs are all a matter of living in the right place with the right amount of field ,woods, and weather. I have more here than I did in Hernando, so a good guess is they are less inclined to be in Fla for those reasons.
