The Mongol Derby

Remember the extreme sports club I belong to???
We’re a schematic of various ages/genders/backgrounds & skill-levels.

The common thread is we are all equine-riding-eccentrics.
Endorphin junkies in the extreme…
Well Suellen has taken it to YET another tier………..

She’s going to ride on the Mongolian-Manchurian Steppe somewhere between Russia and China this summer……………………….in the Mongol Derby…

She applied and she was chosen!

Here’s an explanation………………….it’s entertaining………………it’s crazy……………..(I wish I were younger and skinnier——-Suellen already is.)
*****Description of the Mongol Derby*****

Even though the (feral) horses are hearty…….let’s face it…….I would squish them flat.
Suellen——-not so much.
She’s little, but don’t let that mislead you.
She’s wiry and tough.
Growing up on one of Florida’s cattle ranches, riding became second-nature to her.

But……………..Mongolia!?!
*****Mongol Derby Facebook*****
(I told her I’d go along as her personal Athletic Trainer…….I’d be a super assistant…….I can’t speak Mongolian…….I know enough Russian to get us both in trouble…….Chinese is a no-go…….but I can make a kicker Black Russian.)
………………..I’d be complete dead weight……………..

But Suellen (remember that’s an alias)………………has marched onward, and organized herself.
She is riding for the Moffitt Cancer Research Center.
Here’s her contact page ~~~~~~~ *****GoFundMe*****

I wonder what the temperature will be in that part of the world in August?
Probably not beach-weather……………….
I’ve seen Suellen’s riding skills first-hand. She’s good……………so that won’t be a problem.
I’m betting the cold will be……….
……….she’s a Floridian through and through.

I would guess the local food could be an issue……………..my family grew up eating sheep & goat stews and curry.
“Buuz”~~~apparently is the local favorite~~~mutton.
Hmmmm…….those of you who have had to eat mutton will agree…….it ain’t lamb chops!
Just look at it as chewing-aerobics for the jaw.

As a cattle rancher’s daughter, I would think that goat meat & kefir could be an issue.
Vodka………………now that’s a reliable food-group.

But the saddlebags will be small and liquid can be weighty………….
………….Suellen, you have to loose five pounds………….it’s a sacrifice you will have to make………….just suck it up and do it!
Wouldn’t it be warming too?
Five pounds of vodka……………..that’ll do…

To ride where the Great Khan once rode, works for the historian in me. For as many decades as we have known each other I don’t think I ever told you I liked to ride. Trail specifically. I thought about buying a horse when I was up in the Hernando Mtns but never did. So if I was 20 some years healthier, had the butt callouses, and the money, I would find it intriguing.
Get a mule. You’re in the right state for one! A good mule will babysit you.
I think that Suellen will be riding the same route that was used during Genghis Khan’s era as their pony express.
Cool, huh?
Yep,,,,,Suellen can do it if anyone can. Cannot wait to hear all about it.
I know! Isn’t it great!?! What a bucket-list item!!!
