I missed it…(sigh)…..

Suffice to say…it’s a celebration of Kumquats…..

It’s a fun/local Agro-Festival celebrating the fruit…(it’s quite the local industry)…..

I like the name………….Kumquat………….

Say that five times fast…..

I might add it to my list of fun words I like saying…(I like umlaut too)…..

…..(Iditarod…Saponification…Onomatopoeia…and Nixtamalization)…..

I think I’ll add Kumquat on a trial basis…..

A fellow dinosaur…and Athletic Trainer friend of mine dropped by for some eggs over the weekend…..

She was on her way to the Kumquat Festival in Dade City…..

…..What!…..

How dare all the city-planners have festivals for marauding pirates and tart citrus on the same Day…..(?)…..

Is that a good Venn Diagram/over-lay with a connecting jaunt on the Interstate to two celebrating venues?…..

………….or just sad happenstance and poor civic-planning………….

…..you decide…..

…..(my housewife-logic says they could have been off-set by seven days…and everyone would’ve been happy)…..

Plus…the Kumquat Festival has always been the last weekend in January…..

…..and a potentially fictitious-pirate can drift into Tampa Bay on any high tide on any weekend…..

I would understand if Dade City was mad…..

However…I would’ve missed them both………….(because…it was cold)…..

…..my bedroom is so cold that I’ve been sleeping in long-sleeved pajamas…a tee-shirt…and a buttoned-up (to the chin) flannel shirt…and of course…knee-socks…..

Maybe I should get that cracked window in my bedroom replaced(?)…(it’s just a thought)…(it’s a bit drafty)…..

…..but where the air-conditioning systems (here in sunny/hot Florida) are top-notch with efficiency (when they’re working)…..

…..their combined heating-systems are piss-poor…(I’d never survive up in Lake County, Ohio anymore)…..

…..But Where Was I?…..

What happened to the Kumquat trees I bought at one of the past Kumquat Festivals?…..

…..They Aren’t Out Where I Planted Them Anymore!?!…..

It’s the Goats…I know it’s the Goats…..

…..it’s not the deer that pass through…(well it might be)…but it’s guaranteed the Goats…..

…..They Ate My Kumquat Tree(s)…(plural)…(I had a sweet one and a sour one)…..

Wait!…..

…..remember I tried blackberry bushes (twice) last spring…and now I realize my non-existent kumquat trees are gone too…!!!…

…..plus I missed the Festival…..

…..Damn Goats…..

 

 

*******If You Like Orange Marmalade…Try Kumquat Marmalade*******

~~~Cut one pound of Kumquats in half and de-seed…cover with water and store in fridge over-night.

~~~Save & dry the seeds…(for planting later).

~~~Remove and dice Kumquats…& save water.

~~~Put diced Kumquats and soaking water in pot…bring to boil…cover & simmer for thirty minutes.

~~~Uncover…simmer another twenty/thirty minutes…then add two pounds of sugar.

~~~Keep stirring…ignore the foam…keep stirring.

~~~You can add cinnamon and/or cayenne (to taste)…(I do).

~~~I like tart marmalade…so I don’t use all sweet kumquats…I throw in some sour ones too.

Citrus has it’s own pectin so you don’t have to add any.

Put the marmalade in sterile jars and store them in the refrigerator.  You can freeze them…but every time I try that…a jar inevitably breaks and then there’s a frozen/sticky/mess stuck in my freezer…so I don’t do that anymore…..
