The Farm Gets A Facelift

The Farm Gets A Facelift

Hurricane Season is just around the corner…(again………….sigh)…..

We counted a lot of accumulated dead trees all around our farm…..

…..a lot of limbs hanging over the house…..

…..a lot of dead wood just waiting to fall on the gates…or the barn…or our house…..

…see the tree climber way up there…

We try to learn going forward…which meant…take down the dead trees…before they take down themselves…..

We had the Super-D-Dooper split double trunk of the Live Oak tree in our front yard…which had to be taken down…..

It got that way by a tornado twisting its two trunks during Hurricane Milton in 2024…(at least that’s what the tree removal guy told us)…..

That one really hurt having to take it down…but it was split…and one of the trucks was so close to the house…..

So we learned…it’s better to take down the obvious…on our own time-frame…rather than in an emergency later on…..

Next month…the official annual projected “Hurricane Count” comes out…(I’m not looking forward to that)…..

…..but it is…what it is…..

These guys knew what they were doing…with minimal damage…..

Some of those trees were just SO dead…..

One…was a tree that was hit by lightening years ago…if you remember…it’s the one that we found three dead goats underneath…after one of our Summer lightening storms…..

The following is a link to that post from 2017…Wow!…Nine years ago!…(somehow the post’s pictures didn’t get saved throughout the years?…I wonder why?)

So the tree they took down…lasted for almost ten years after that lightening strike…..

…..it faired better than the three goats did…..

That illustration of the dead bloated goats floating down stream in the swamp (with the vultures) will forever be acid etched into my memory…..

No wonder I’m an insomniac…..

But the farm is moving forward…..

Unfortunately…not our farm…

It looks better after this recent facelift…..

But there are so many brush and wood piles left to dispose of…..

I really don’t mind an excuse for a bonfire…but we are in the middle of a drought right now…..

And there’s a “Burn Ban” in effect…..

So no bonfires until the rainy season starts…..

I’ll be patient…..

The tree guys even removed the oak tree that fell on the round pen (about three years ago)…they just threw that one in…just because…..

That was really nice of them…..

Crushed Round Pen Panel

They also cleared Sibyl’s and Bartholomew’s paddock area behind the barn…..

None of my chainsaw bars were even long enough to reach half way through the trunk of that big Live Oak tree that fell in the paddock and hit the barn….

…..so it’s stayed there for longer than we intended…..

But the tree guys removed that too…..

…and they moved the stump to here…and here it will stay…

All in all the farm looks different today…..

A lot more open and sunnier…..
