Memoirs from the All Florida Meet

Memoirs from the All Florida Meet

I survived.       Lola excelled.         Ruby flew through it.           And Violet hates me……..         There were so many exciting times, exhilarating runs, fresh disasters, good food, rivers of champagne, and better than mediocre bourbon. Let’s not over-look the variety of flasks that would appear out of nowhere with sudden and surprising regularity. They would sprout from Hunt jacket pockets, saddlebags, and inside vest pockets. The…

The Marathon

The Marathon

Sore—-sore—-and sore…     We leave tomorrow morning at 4:00AM for a ranch south of here.  That will be Hunt number three in four days.     I think Violet and Ruby are shell-shocked.       But even so, when I woke up this morning they were at the front gate looking eagerly down the road.  And anytime any of us would go outside, they follow us around and ultimately walk over and wait by the…

Sub-Tropical Cold

Sub-Tropical Cold

Hoo!  Boy!  We’ve had another cold snap……………this one was more of a cold slap/crack/and or punch. Floridians don’t handle cold well. But we Hunted!                    I had on my newly acquired Cuddle Duds…………my new insulated underwear from our local Walmart. They appear to fit under my breeches (and that’s a feat in itself—–because there is little to no extra room in my breeches).       Double socks (but that’s normal)….

Numb Toes

Numb Toes

I’ve been riding a lot recently………………..well, a lot for me. I’ve been Hunting more than I ever have in the past.  Body and horse willing, I intend to keep up this agenda. Any day now the sore body and sore muscles and sore joints should start subsiding………………….any day now………………..any day now. I don’t understand why some of my toes on my feet are remaining numb———–to varying degrees………………depending on which toe. My boots are very stiff.  They were bargain basement…

Riding Again (with Modifications)

Riding Again (with Modifications)

We’ve established.  I’m not proud.  I will accomplish what I have to, when I have to, and it doesn’t have to be pretty. I’ve hauled and Hunted three consecutive times now in a row.  And I am planning to again this coming Wednesday. I must have some muscles left.  I know this because whatever is left of my phantom musculature is screaming and whining………………..but that’s a good thing………………………it has to be…………..(?)  Throwing in the towel is not an option. What…

One More Time Around

One More Time Around

The stronger bit for Violet has arrived!  HA!  Horse! Try spinning me off again! But before that, Ruby will be my steed.  But Ruby is “barn sour”, “pasture sour”, “herd bound”, “buddy sour”………………….by any name, it’s a pain.  And it’s a sorrow. I haven’t ridden regularly for so long, they have all gotten used to reclining in the pasture, eating alfalfa and bon-bons…………………..while sipping on sweet tea.       And then I get my last (hopefully) joint replaced…

The Big Bounce

The Big Bounce

Well, I got “that” one out of the way pretty quickly. I “was” worried about what would happen when four artificial joints splatted with their geriatric owner on the ground, from the saddle of a tall horse.Phew!  Don’t have to worry about THAT one anymore. What a relief.   That worry was weighing on me……………….but not anymore!!! So, we’re good? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This last weekend I went trail riding with Lola and Sapphire (pssst……………….Sapphire is not her real name…………………..it’s an…

Bubble Bath Beauties

Bubble Bath Beauties

I have my work cut out for me.  I have two big mama’s who need bathing.  Actually, I have more than two…………but today………..it’s just these two. They need scrubbing and hosing and rinsing.  They are equine-examples of the phrase—–“Rinse, Lather and Repeat”—–a lot. I love their socks and feathers.  I don’t love their maintenance.  But alack alas.  It’s one of the perks & troubles of owning a “feathered” breed.  Clydesdales are so very unique and quirky and hairy.  They…

Button Braids and Stuff

Button Braids and Stuff

I probably take better care of my hoses’s mane & tail than I do my own hair (and it looks like it too).  But really that doesn’t mean I take good care of their coat either.  It just means that mine is always worse.  The same thing applies to the Irish Wolfhounds. There are some really good horse hair & coat products out there.  So many different horse &/or livestock products that have crossed over to the realm-of-human-usage.  My doctors…
