To Fix Or Not To Fix…….

To Fix Or Not To Fix…….

It’s never good to put off repairs… I’ve learned over the years that when you first notice something needs fixing……………………that’s the time to fix it… I have learned this… Yes, I have…   I just haven’t learned to listen to that inner voice that tells me to fix something RIGHT THEN!!! So a little while ago, I noticed that the post in the ground (that secured the PVC hose connection) had rotted. It’s an important hose.  We use it…

Concussed & Other Safety Issues

Concussed & Other Safety Issues

I think I’m concussed…     Although, I probably shouldn’t be the one to ask… I had Paolo check my pupils with a flashlight for weird dilations…     I refused to get stitches……………I didn’t want a patch shaved on my head…   Tools for the rural lifestyle are not the petite, delicate gardening tools you can easily find in the outdoor section of Walmart. You have to seek them out at specialty farm stores and catalogs……

***************IT’S TEA TIME!***************

***************IT’S TEA TIME!***************

Our Riding Club season has begun………….. Through the Jell-O-consistency humidity and the dripping, suffocating heat and the hurricane threats (at best)…………..we ride on… We’re idiots… …………equine endorphine-swilling idiots…………   …………but we ride on………… …………and it’s great.   With the advent of our Hunt season, our family’s scheduled “Tea” is just around the corner. And by “just around the corner”, by that I mean it’s five days away…   I just did a hit on our neighborhood liquor store (if…

Shear-Bolts & Their Need (a.k.a.—A Tutorial On How To Shear A Shear-Bolt)

Shear-Bolts & Their Need (a.k.a.—A Tutorial On How To Shear A Shear-Bolt)

Well, I blew out a shear-bolt for the first time. Easy Peasy. It won’t be my last…………..I’m quite sure… They appear to be very easy to dispatch.   Shear-bolts are handy things. Apparently so are slip-clutches……………but that’s not what we are talking about right now… This is specifically a sheared shear-bolt conversation. I was succinct in my attempts.  I popped the tractor’s clutch/engaged the PTO abruptly…………….. ……………….and Bob’s your Uncle! Bob needs to learn more about the delicacies of…

The Fuchsia Canon & Me

The Fuchsia Canon & Me

Still doing battle with my little, pink camera…………………………… Yep, pink……………. ………….really, really pink……………. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My little pink camera irks me so…          Grrrrrrrrrrrr……….. It’s just so perfect… And it flaunts it… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I could deal with a huge, cumbersome, galvanized-gray camera with stops and speeds and lens that require a pipe wrench to zoom in and zoom out. I would even rather have to drag around a tripod for a behemoth, manual camera-slug—–who does nothing by…

Hog Jowls & Collard Greens

Hog Jowls & Collard Greens

Happy New Year! Hog Jowls are on sale. So are Collards. So are Black-Eyed Peas. Peas are for pennies; greens are for dollars; and cornbread is for gold. We are going to eat that Prime Rib I mentioned earlier that was on sale…………………….for clogged arteries?  Maybe gout?  Or hemochromatosis? I do think collards would go with Prime Rib.  Mashed potatoes, too. Hmmmmmmmmm, I need another vegetable. I’ve got this tuber-casserole-thing that’s frozen (the recipe has a much prettier name—–something like,…

Riding Again (with Modifications)

Riding Again (with Modifications)

We’ve established.  I’m not proud.  I will accomplish what I have to, when I have to, and it doesn’t have to be pretty. I’ve hauled and Hunted three consecutive times now in a row.  And I am planning to again this coming Wednesday. I must have some muscles left.  I know this because whatever is left of my phantom musculature is screaming and whining………………..but that’s a good thing………………………it has to be…………..(?)  Throwing in the towel is not an option. What…

It’s Pyro-Technic-Time!!!

It’s Pyro-Technic-Time!!!

It’s time for Florida’s three days of cold.  I have seven cords of wood. I’m ready. I spent a day with the front-end-loader picking up and stacking firewood.  I’ve knocked off carpenter ants, red ants, worms, chameleons that aren’t chameleons (but I can’t remember what they are actually called).  I wore gloves and boots and the weather was cool-ish, so the likely-hood of highly interactive, poisonous snakes was on the low side.  But I kept my one-good-eye peeled for…

You Know You’re Tired When………..

You Know You’re Tired When………..

Got up.  Dealt with bounding house animals. Checked tea pot for left-over tea.  Started new kettle.  Washed out tea pot while nuking left-over tea from yesterday.  Thought about composting tea bags.  Decided not to (again).  Dealt with newly-found dirty dishes in sink.  It’s magic how they materialize after midnight. Used hot water to clean gathered eggs found in a pail by the sink (that one’s on me, I left them there).  Lined up cleaned eggs to air-dry on…

IRMA—(and the resulting) Worried Foods/Sad Foods/& (not so) Good Foods

Well, “She’s” decided to head our way…………………………….well, we are not a very wide state to begin with anyway. We’ve added locked gas caps to all our vehicles.  I like to (and I try to) remain optimistic about my fellow man.  I also think it’s always prudent and good common sense not to test that optimism.  Adding some locks & keys to the situation and a back up 9mm just helps to maintain an optimistic, open-minded approach to things. Our generator…
