Barley………What’s Not To Love

Barley………What’s Not To Love

Remember the recent Brisket Ode? Well, I  successfully arm-wrestled hounds, husband and daughter and won.   I kept the heel of the brisket (if it even has a foot), along with all the drippings and rendered vegetables………………..and I hid the bowl in the back of the fridge. So the plan is………… The temperature today is dipping…………   I’ve got the fireplace swept out and ready to go……………….I’ve got ample damp wood at the ready…     Now, back…

Ode to a Brisket

Ode to a Brisket

Aahhhh~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Beef Brisket.   The aroma, the vegetables, the process, the patience, the sojourn………………..   I love a good brisket……………..     My Jewish friends showed me the ropes………………..not the ropes in terms of Ropa Vieja (but I love that too)……………….but the ropes in terms of how to make a good, tender Beef Brisket. I love Beef………………. ……………..Oh, I do……………….! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm………………….   …………………………a moment, please………………………….     ……………….Okay, I’m back now………………… I stack onions and potatoes and carrots and celery…

Cooker-Smokers Rule!

Cooker-Smokers Rule!

I do love me a slab of smoked meat. Nothing better that a slab of smokey-flavored, self-basted, slow-cooked meat. I could never survive as a vegan. Nope. But, I’m feeling vulnerable. I’m feeling insecure, unsure, kind-of-like trying to fly with one wing. My cooker-smoker has been ratcheted down on a flat-bed trailer and taken away for soldering & repair—————-such sadness. I’d only let it go with a friend who I trust. I trust this friend. It’s in good, qualified…

Birthday Break

Birthday Break

I’m blocking Dr. Atkins from this post. He can never read this…       You see, my birthday is the last day of this month. I’ve been so good Dr. Atkins’ing it. I really have.   (Pat-on-the-Back;  Happy Dancing;  Fist-Pumps;  Hoots & Whistles.)     I’ve lost forty pounds………………….really it’s only because I can move again. Two new/artificial hips and two new/artificial knees can have that affect on a person. My doctor asked me…

Pot Luck Woes

Pot Luck Woes

Today’s Tea is a Pot Luck. I prepared for it last night by making over six dozen peanut butter cookies (my grandmother’s recipe).   I dutifully placed them on the THIRD shelf of our pie safe, which is attached to the wall above one of our kitchen butcher blocks. The third shelf is the “safe” shelf. We know this from trial and error experience. Anything  below the third shelf, the cats can reach……………… We’ve caught them licking…

Food & Festivities

Food & Festivities

We all survived another bonfire party. Only those things that were intended to get burned got burned. Phew.           That’s always a plus. My older daughter had all of her friends over.  It was a Christmas Cookie Decorating Extravaganza. Young adults, lots of refined sugar and Fireball bourbon…………………..very entertaining to watch. No fish-bowl-concoction this time.  (That last one—–the morning after—–was really scary—–you needed a bull whip and a mace just to get near it.) But…
