Stacking the Chicken Deck…….(or how to win big bucks @ next years Florida State Fair)

Stacking the Chicken Deck…….(or how to win big bucks @ next years Florida State Fair)

I’m perusing the poultry web-sites…

I’m checking chicken mail-order catalogs…

This IS the time of year to start prepping for next year’s Poultry Show at the Florida State Fair.

My younger daughter got her prize money winnings for her Best of Breed Blue-Laced Red Wyandotte hen———she won $5.00…

…………………………………………….Woot!  Woot!………………………………………………

Simone should have received her prize money check in the mail by now for her Rooster “Rex”.  She either got $3.00 or maybe even a whopping $5.00!!!

I’ve got to up the ante for poor ole’ Lola…………..her hen, “In the Buff” was a non-starter.

So along that line……………..I’m thinking of adding some Lavender Orpington’s or maybe even some Jubilee Orpington’s…………….or really splurge and get both…

I don’t know how to post photos of either of those colored breeds yet…………..but they are pretty and sure to please…

Let me give this a shot and put in the catalog information attachments…

*****Lavender Orpington Chickens*****

*****Jubilee Orpington Chickens*****

I do need more Black Copper Marans…………………..we had some Irish Wolfhound attrition………..

*****Black Copper Maran Chickens*****

We have livestock fencing all around the backyard where the hounds exercise.

In addition to that, I’ve already j-clipped chicken wire to the bottom of the main livestock fencing.

Along with that, I’ve covered every gate into the backyard with the same chicken wire…

…………and yet some (short-lived) chickens insist on figuring out ways of getting into the backyard……………for an ill-timed, short-duration jaunt…

Dumb birds…

But the smarter poultry, who have the lasting/multi-generational DNA………….they’re the ones who stay in the front yard…

I have NEVER seen a Lavender Orpington at the Fair……………(we all know that lavender just means glorified-gray, right?)

***********Oh wait, I just re-read the description of the purple birds…………they haven’t been accepted by the APA (American Poultry Association…………..

Hmmmmmmmmm…………….well we can’t have that can we…………..?

Okay———the purple birds are out…………….the Jubilee are in.

I think I remember seeing some Jubilee Orpington’s in past years.

Well, it’s good to plan ahead.

I’ll need to make more carrier cages prior to next year.

After this year’s competition, I even had some disgruntled friends get perturbed because I forgot to remind them & offer a chicken for them to show…………………….I DO have one or two other things on my plate on a daily basis…

Next year I think we will need to up-grade from a dolly to a four/pneumatic-tired cart…

We all know this entire chicken-showing fervor with my friends is spurred on by everyone’s deep-seeded desire for fried Fair food.

Fried Twinkies;  Fried Ice Cream;  Fried Oreos;  Fried Pickles;  Fried Snickers;  French Fries;  Elephant Ears;  Hamburgers with Fried Donuts for Buns (I’m not kidding); Funnel Cakes………………….the frying is only limited by your imagination and your gall bladder’s constitution…
