San Antonio, Florida~~Annual Rattlesnake Festival
Just another day at the oasis in the swamp…
But here are a couple basics that always occur…
At this time of year…….
…..you always wear boots…….
…..and you always shuffle your feet when outside feeding & tending to everybody in the pastures…
Why?
Well, it seems to be the time of year when the snakes are more “active”…
…..maybe they are looking for a good place to settle in for the up-coming colder weather…….?
I don’t know…
…..but you seem to see more snakes moving during this month…
I’ve seen a big-mama of a rat snake in the stored wood under the wagon shed…….(she’s cool as long as she stays away from my chicken eggs on the other side of the house).

…..and there’s a black racer in the front pasture…….it’s so pretty…….and FAST!…….(duh)…
In fact, a near-by town even has an Annual Rattlesnake Festival this time of year…..(I kid you not).

It’s a fun local event…….and the tee-shirts make great Christmas presents…….
There’s a contest for the largest rattlesnake that’s caught during the annual competition…..(I don’t participate)…….
Local orange groves seem to be the most popular place to locate and trap the biggest/bestest Diamondbacks.
(Keep in mind our first Fox Hunt of this season was all through an old orange grove…….all the more reason to keep your butt in the saddle and not fall off…)

Yep…….snakes…….a guaranteed denizen in rural Florida…….

They used to be able to “bring em in dead” “back in the day” of said festival. In fact it was encouraged. Biggest one I saw in the wilds of Fla. was when I was touring the Turtle Lakes subdivision while it was being built. Back when I was doing real estate. It was at least 8 ft long. My neighbor killed a six footer that was sunning itself in his driveway one Feb. day in Hernando. He had two small kids at the time.
