Pot Luck Woes

Today’s Tea is a Pot Luck.
I prepared for it last night by making over six dozen peanut butter cookies (my grandmother’s recipe).
I dutifully placed them on the THIRD shelf of our pie safe, which is attached to the wall above one of our kitchen butcher blocks.
The third shelf is the “safe” shelf.
We know this from trial and error experience.
Anything below the third shelf, the cats can reach………………

We’ve caught them licking the butter dish or snagging filling out of pies if they are stored on the second or first shelf…

But…………my bad…………I did stash the cookies on the “safe” Shelf #3 for storage over-night, but I put them on a longer cooling rack.
It hung over the edge of the third shelf by just an itsy bitsy amount.
Silly me.
What was I thinking!?!

Apparently the cast of house kitties took that as a dare. Like I threw down a glove to provoke a challenge………………
Could they rise to the occasion and capitalize on this cooling rack error to their best advantage…………..and steal cookies?

…Of course they did.
The little fuzzy jerks worked their devious maneuvers after we all went to bed…………….in the still of the night……………..I’m sure that Copernicus was the ring leader.

Prosecco was his second. (They are both conniving sociopathic felines.)
Well, one of them stretched up really far on their hind legs and snagged the edge of the cooling rack with a claw and whipped it (and all six dozen of the peanut butter cookies) off of Shelf #3 onto the bottom shelves, the butcher block, and the floor.
Now enter the rest of the opportunistic kitties and the clean-up crowd (the Wolfhounds, and terriers).

We came out in the morning to a kitchen floor that looked more like a dutch-crumble topping than a tile floor.

The cooling rack was dragged to the den, and everyone looked ill.
Good…

The Jack Russell looked like a knockwurst and he probably developed a peanut allergy because of his opportunistic gorging.
I had to make an emergency auxiliary batch of oatmeal cookies to take to the Pot Luck Tea.
