~Pasture Gates~

*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps*******

In my lifetime I’ve hung a few pasture gates…..

Big horses…unruly foals…strategically placed falling limbs…obnoxious buck goats…(misdirected tractors)…and hurricanes….have all played their roles in the need for replacing farm gates…..

Fence line changes have played their part in the addition of more gates…but honestly…it’s usually because a gate gets obliterated by some act of Nature…..

…..(or a defiant draft horse)…..

And so…my daughters and I have become aficionados at gate placements…re-placements…and installations…..

…..and on the odd (not so rare) occasion…we’ve become very adept at the procurement and/or “lifting” of old abandoned gates…..

…..which have been left to rust by developers in forgotten pastures…..

…..(but shhhhh…you never read that…and Pascal–you were sworn to secrecy!)…..

*****(Who The Hell is Pascal?)*****

My older daughter is the very serious sort………….me…not so much…..

If I don’t roll with the punches…then I might as well just stay down…(and that’s just not my nature)…..

So I try to laugh at my mistakes…(and I’ve had a lot of ’em)…I’m old and I just don’t get hysterical about them anymore…..

But mistakes do happen…..

My Advice is…Sweat the Big Ones…and keep the rest in Perspective…..

Beau

However………….Now…I’ll segue to the pigs……

Our KuneKune pigs are wonderful…and like I’ve said before…they are a not a rooting/digging breed of pigs…..

…..they are grazers…..

Which is cool…because they are like chunky self-activating mowers…..

Beau & Clover

…..plus they like weeds…(which is super great)…..

But the boogers have discovered how to lift their gate off its hinges and wander unannounced into the backyard………….where the Irish Wolfhounds hang out…..

Drogo & Sabine

…..Potentially Not a Good Situation…..

Needless to say…my older daughter and I have had to resolve this potential pork-tastrophe…..

We had to make that gate more secure…and Kune-proof…..

Clover

…..a little higher…so the Kune’s couldn’t lever it off its hinges as easily…but not too high…where the chickens could get underneath and wander into the backyard…(for the Wolfhound’s macabre entertainment)…..

So we got to work with our power tools and my Dad’s old wood drill bits…and off we went to the races…..

A couple mistakes did occur…but…Oh well…..

…..we drilled a couple “unnecessary yet decorative holes”…but we found the appropriate gate height and straightness to contain the KuneKune’s…..

…..and………….Tra!~La!…..

…(oops)…

Were levels used?…oh Hell no!…..

Nothing on this farm is either level or square…I prefer…”artistic deviations”…..

Winding in the Upper Gate Hinge

Is the gate Wolfhound worthy?………….yep…..

Is it Pig Tight?………….we have yet to find out…..

But we put a bench out there…for perusing the pigs….(while sipping on a mediocre bourbon and Coke)…..

…..just to relax…while making sure the conniving KuneKune’s are contained…and the Irish Wolfhounds are behaving…..

~~~~~Life is Good~~~~~
…..Sweat the Big Ones…..
…..and a few extra holes in a pasture gate post are Not one of the Big Ones…..
~~~Cheers!~~~
