~~More Chick-let Information~~

So the fitted-sheet/swaddled dog cage is working quite well…..thank you for asking…

The house-kitties are…..less soggy…..but still daring & damp…….

…..and completely thwarted (so far) in their attempts to snag a Chick-let McNugget out of the cage…

Gatsby

…..(I just love it when a good plan comes together)…..

We’ve suspended their waterer from the top of the cage…..so there are no wood shavings in their drinking water…..(and no drowned chicks, either…..so far)…

…..I dipped all their little faces in water prior to putting them in their brooder-cage when I originally took them out of their shipping box…

(sometimes, the silly little peepers don’t know how to drink…..unless you show them)

(so, I step in as mother hen)

…..I have to regularly drop in cut-up grass for the babies (to keep them from getting bored and pecking each other)…

…..their “egg-tooths” (egg-teeth?) have fallen off…..(now, you may be asking…..just what the !@#$%$# ¬†is an “egg-tooth”?)

***Egg Tooth Explained***

TMI??

You bet’cha!

But wait…..there’s more…

Shipping chicks works out so well…….

…..because¬†(by using their egg-tooth) to break the egg and hatch…..they then absorb all of the remaining yolk into their abdomens…

After doing that…..they don’t need to eat or drink for about forty-eight hours…

So…..shipping newly-hatched chicks can be done during this dormancy-period…..right after coming out of their shell…..when they can survive on the remaining nutrients in the yolk…

TMI??

We’re getting there, huh?

I have foggy memories of going in to Willoughby’s and/or Painesville’s train station in Ohio (when I was little) to pick up mail-order chicks…

I remember peeking through the holes in the box and seeing the little babies peeking back at me…

The system hasn’t really changed much in the following decades…….

…..except I did notice the new/green/gooey things in this year’s box bedding…….

Copernicus

…..I guess it’s for moisture for the babies…..(?)…..and I noticed it was only on the side of the box with the brown chicks…..(?)…..hmmmmmmmmmmmm…

Maybe they were slightly older chicks…..(?)

I don’t know…

AND the nice people at the hatchery marked my baby roosters for me with pink-dots by their beaks…

(I purposefully bought a Welsummer and a French Black Copper Mare cockerel)

………….and…..YES…..I’m planning ahead & stacking the odds for blue ribbons at the next Florida State Fair Poultry Show…

……………………….after all…..it’s all about the ribbons, isn’t it?………………………

…..and, of course…..the mid-way’s greasy/fried foods…
