Let’s Talk Cows

Yes…Let’s…..
I’m seriously considering and preparing for the addition of a couple cows to our happy little rural menagerie…..

I’ve already done a past post on Florida Cracker Cattle…..
***(Post: Bees, Donkey, & Cows)***
Let’s say a person (like me) were to get a couple cows…and let’s say that person (me–again) lives in Florida…..

It would make sense to get a type of cow that was particularly suited for Florida’s climate and terrain…(i.e. swampy…muddy…moldy…sometimes sandy…always wet…sloppy…Hot…and overtly humid)…(except when it’s freezing)…..
Our farm is nothing like one of those pretty pristine farmlands depicted on scenic calendars…..

But it’s good knowing what you’re getting into…first…before you jump in at the deep end…..
Like this…..

One of my friends casually mentioned…..
“You’re going to need a solid door trailer when you pickup your cows”………….(Wait!…What?)…..
Solid door?…What do you mean?…..

Well…apparently…if the back door of a trailer is the dutch door type…..
…..then a cow could potentially heave their bovine bulkiness out and over the bottom half…and onto the highway(!)…..

Oh…hell…no!…..
But who would’ve thought!…(I certainly hadn’t considered that as even a minute potential?)…..

I thought the dutch door type trailers were good for aeration here in steamy hot Florida…and whoever you were hauling would appreciate the wind in their hair…..

But apparently not cows…..
…..who might have a propensity to try to leap out…..

…..(dumb cow)…..
This friend then offered her steel enclosed trailer…(for when I go to pick up my cows)…..
Just when you think you’re part of an educated rural population…..

…..you find out there’s a lot more to learn…..
And I certainly don’t want bouncing bovine Bossie’s down the highway…..

My rural expertise would be judged harshly for that error…..
…..(I don’t even want to think about it)…..

Needless to say…I’ll be borrowing my friends closed-in trailer when we are ultimately ready to buy the cows…..
I recently spoke to my rancher friend on the type of fencing that’s appropriate for cows…..

I would’ve thought that electric was the five star winner when it came to containing cattle…..
But apparently not…..
Barbed wire is the fencing of choice…(Oh, goodie…my favorite)…..

She said ten feet between the posts and four strands of barbed wire…..
…..(Oh, goodie…Times four)…..

Well…I guess that’s what will be happening in the back pasture then…very soon…..
My older daughter and I are re-arranging the posts…and I guess we will shortly be stringing barbed wire back there too…..

Good times…Good times…..
Let the blood letting begin…..
