Idiosyncrasies & The Laying Hen
*******Please Subscribe To My Blog…..It Really Helps*******

I had thought we had gotten through all the broodiness of the hens this last Spring…..
…..apparently not…and it’s late August…..

I have some very stubborn ladies…..
There is one of the Buff Brahma hens and one of the Buff Orpington hens who Do Not want to stop setting…..

They are insisting on staying on their now lethal eggs on their grotty dirty nests…far beyond any appropriate hatching time…..
…..(yuck)…..

I suppose the only thing good about their stubbornness…is that they decided to be stubborn inside the safety of the chicken coop…..
These two hens have stayed on these nests for months…on the same eggs………….for months…..

I’ve tried talking to them about this………….but they just won’t listen…..
They are hens on a mission…..

And unfortunately…their makeshift nests (that they’re camping out on)…are directly under the other chickens’ roosts…..
…..(directly under)…..
So they’re in direct aim of all of the perched chickens above them…every night…for months…..

What’s wrong with these two birds!?!…..
Their personal hygiene has gone the way of the DoDo…..

Don’t they notice?………….I mean…there’s an accumulation of chicken !#$%$! on their backs…..
…..eeewwwww!…..
I’ve tried to pick them up and move them…..

But they immediately go back to the same nasty nests…..
I have (very carefully) removed their extremely old gaseous eggs from underneath them…(because we all know that rotten eggs are more like unstable nitroglycerin sulfur bombs)…..

…..only to find that the next morning they’ve rolled stolen eggs across the coop floor and into their mildewy nests…..
They are extremely driven and single-minded….

They’ve laid their own eggs…they’ve stolen other hen’s eggs…they roll each others eggs around and hide them underneath their fluffy butts…..
These poor old biddies are deranged…..

Usually I leave the old eggs (with unknown expiration dates) out for the crows…I have specific places in the front yard where I leave the crow snacks…..
When I started quietly removing some of these vintage eggs out from underneath the hens…I put them out for the crows…..

The crows did not like my feigned generosity…and believe me…..
You do NOT want to get on the bad side of your neighborhood crows…..
…..(a flock is called a murder of crows for good reason)…..

I subsequently found broken rotten eggs thrown at my truck…and at our windows…..
…..Hey…I’m Trying Here!!!…..

So to date…those two bullheaded hens…are still sitting on empty depressions of dirt…..
I’ve systematically removed all of the unctuous fossilized eggs…and all of the equally decayed nesting material…and each day I remove whatever new eggs they’ve stolen from someone else…..
