I spotted this tiny little attempt at a sapling when I was setting up for our recent Winter Solstice celebration…..

It was growing from the base of what remains of the beautiful old oak tree…the one we had to take down right after Hurricane Milton…..

If you recall…Milton’s winds caused a big growing house-threatening crack at the base of the twin trucks of the huge tree…..

I absolutely hated taking down that old oak…but the split at its base made it too dangerous to leave right by the front of our house…..

It was a heart wrenching decision…one I’ve felt bad about ever since…but there really wasn’t any other choice…..

I suppose we could have left it…and played Russian roulette…and waited to see which way it would fall…..

…..but that really didn’t seem like a grown-up choice…now did it?…..

But I see the echoes of that gorgeous tree every time I walk by where it used to be…..

As a small tribute…I’ve been using the flat base of the remaining trunks as serving tables…when we’re sitting in the front yard…..

When I was prepping the “beverage table” for last month’s bonfire…I spotted this little sapling…growing from one of the tree’s remaining roots…..

My Dad used to critically call these adjunct attempts…”suckers”…I don’t care what they’re called…I just want this one to keep growing…..

Irma on the Mounting Block

So rather than set up the bar for the Solstice on the old tree trunk…I moved it to the top of the nearby mounting block (which we use for climbing up onto the horses)…(i.e. the mobile home steps)…..

I figured it would be safer for the fledgling tree…and less likely to be stepped on in the dark…..

…(it’s hard to see…but it’s there)…

I intend to further safeguard this tiny attempt at a tree by surrounding it with bricks and rocks…so people will stub their toes before stepping on it…..

The chickens don’t seem to notice it or care (that’s good)…..

It’s not actually from an acorn…but it shows our grand old friend is still there…..

…..and alive…and trying…..

…(it’s getting bigger every day)…

It’s got a long way to go before it’s anywhere close to catching up to its previous resplendency…..

~~~but it’s a start~~~
