Holiday Food & Festivities

We all survived another bonfire party…..
Only those things that were intended to get burned got burned…..
Phew………….That’s Always A Plus…..
My older daughter had all of her friends over…It was a Christmas Cookie Decorating Extravaganza…..
Young adults, lots of refined sugar and Fireball bourbon………….very entertaining to watch…..
No fish-bowl-concoction this time…(That last one—–the morning after—–was really scary—–you needed a bull whip and a mace just to get near that drink)…..

But this party was a good mix of fun people…there were baby goats on laps…round bales to scale &/or roll…big compressed alfalfa bales as seats…and LOTS of junk food…..
A primo amount of junk food…..
We even dragged Prancer down from the hayloft and re-strung her (?) with new lights…..

Did you know…at the time of year when Santa drives his sleigh…all the reindeer would have to be females…because…at that time of year…only the females have antlers(?)…..
And really…who would name a boy reindeer—-Vixen?
But back to the cookies…I do have to say…my Rum Balls were a big hit.
Yep…Grandma’s recipe reigns supreme…over the years…I’ve learned how to make them more potent…you can practically see the alcoholic vapors ripple through the air as they evaporate off them—–They are fun/little/pop-in-your-mouth/alcoholic explosions…..
Plus, I made a large kettle of home-made Kahlua…I tripled that recipe…easy-peasy…and tasty…the recipe calls for it to set & age for six weeks…..
Well…that never happens…..
I love to use emptied Patron bottles for my home-made-hooch. The bottles are always so pretty and hand-blown (or at least I think they are). I love emptying Patron bottles too.
Actually I’m not that big on Tequila anymore…it had to do with a fencing tournament in Mexico City in the 70’s and the Venezuelan Olympic Fencing Team…and the high jump pit…..

…..and I don’t want to talk about it…..
You probably think I’m kidding…..
Anyway………….the first Hunt after Christmas is traditionally hosted by the Pony Club. So…if we want our own adult beverages…we need to bring our own…..
I figured I’d bring some home-made Kahlua (aged nine days) and vodka, so people can make their own Black Russians…..

I’ve been watching the sale paper at our local Winn-Dixie.
AND THEY HAVE PRIME RIB ON SALE!!!

Geez Louise…I love beef…..
Prime Rib just HAS to figure into one of the up-coming celebratory dinners……………..oh, please—–oh, please—–oh, pleeezzzzeee…..
I love dental-flossing with the string that they use to truss it up. I love the fat. I’ll lick the pan and fight the hounds for it.
Ooh, ooh………………and then there’s Beef Wellington…Oh! Boy!
That HAS to figure into another up-coming celebratory dinner somewhere too. It just has to!
(I really could be the Beef Council’s best spokesperson)…..

~~~~~~~Grandma’s Rum Ball Recipe~~~~~~~(2—2 1/2 Dozen)
2 Cups Finely crushed Vanilla Wafers (generic brand).
1 lbs. Powdered Sugar.
1 1/2 Cup chopped pecans or walnuts or almonds or coconut flakes (I never bother with this part—I like my Rum Balls plain & strong).
2 Tablespoons of powdered cocoa.
2 Tablespoons of light(?) corn syrup.
1/4 to 1/2 Cups of Rum or Brandy or anything with a kick in it (my Grandmother’s exact words).
METHOD: Mix crumbs, powdered sugar, one cup of nut meats (?). Add cocoa, syrup, and Rum or anything you have. Mix well. Let stand for 30 minutes. Shape into one inch balls. Roll in granulated sugar, nuts, coffee or you can add one half of a candied cherry on each one. Store in air-tight container.
…..(I always double my recipe)…..
Actually…I don’t know what I do………….by the time I finish doctoring-it-up………….but they’re good………….
Here are MY recipe variables (with Grandma’s approval).
I have always rolled them in sugar. I like the idea of rolling them in coffee, but I haven’t tried that one yet. My suggestion is to buy extra boxes of Vanilla Wafers……………………………….(oh, and one box of cookies works out to about two cups of crumbs.) Get a cheap/large bottle of Rum (or two)…..
So now———————wash your hands (you will need them to mix the dough…otherwise you will break a spoon and/or burn out the motor of your mixer).
Follow the above recipe…..
Then…..
Keep adding Rum and more vanilla wafers (to absorb the rum)…………………
Until you think you’ve added enough…………or you’ve run out of Rum.
You’re welcome…..
