As we know…..

Claire is off in her solo-pasture-spa having some “me time” alone…..

Finley  &  Claire

…..without her outrageous son…..

Finley…..on the other hand…..is in with Daddy…..

…..learning some manners…..(heh, heh, heh)…..

Brave’s a cool dude…..

…..cooler than most stallions you’ll meet…..

A lot of you horse breeders out there might be pulling out your hair…..

…..at the thought of putting a stud colt in with his stallion father…..

You’re probably saying what the !@#$%^&^%$#@! are you doing!!!

But over the years and with my own observations…..I’ve found there are variables to consider…..

#1—–the breed of horse and their inherent temperment…..

#2—–the individual personalities of the horses involved…..

#3—–how they were raised…..by that I mean…..were they always kept in separate turn-outs or paddocks…..were they stalled by themselves the majority of the time?…..

#4—–if they were pasture/herd-raised…..there’s a pecking-order that’s painfully established…..I’ve found that if it’s done early…..the babies learn…..

Finley first was with his Mom…..

Then when he was weaned…..he was put in with a veteran brood mare (Addy)…..and she thumped him regularly (whenever he stepped out of line)…..

Addy  &  Finley

Then when he matured to the point that we didn’t want him being “too frisky” or “studly” around Addy…..

…..we put him in with Daddy…..

…..and Daddy don’t put up with no un-gentlemanly-behavior from his son…..

We kept an eye on each transition…..every step of the way…..

…..Finley was a mean-machine to Claire…..

…..Then Addy got her turn with him…..(really not too bad at all)…..(mostly feints and proffered teeth)…..

…..Then Brave didn’t really care about his son sharing a pasture with him…..except around feeding time…..

…..Finley would start messing around…..trying to take Brave’s food…..while abandoning his own…..

……basically instigating trouble…..

…..well…..it worked…..

And…..Finley doesn’t do that anymore…..

He’s had a few dings and scruffs and chunks taken out of him…..only one required any superficial treatment and medicine…..no stitches…..

Now Finley knows his pecking-order with Dad too…..

…..(plus his bald spots will grow back in eventually)…..

Mary Constance suggested it was time for Finley to start round pen work…..

…..I think she’s right…..

I’ll be starting that…..in one or two weeks…..or was that one month or two?…..

Soon………….Finley………….soon………….
