Excessive Heat & Horses

…..Hoo Baby! It’s Hot!…..
The forecasted temperature for the last few days has been 96F!…and that’s not even taking into account that mysterious “Feels Like” temperature…the one that’s SO much hotter…the one that all the meteorologists like to threaten….

I worry about the animals…..
I worry about the animals who are outdoors…..
I worry about the horses…..
I just worry…..

…..a lot…..
Where Acts of God are concerned…that’s about all I can do…so I worry to the best of my ability…..

We’ve prepared as much as we can…..
There are big mineral and salt blocks available 24/7…there’s ample clean water…there are multiple areas for shade…..

But 96F Degrees…Is 96F Degrees…there’s just no getting around that…..
We’ve found two dead hens so far…..

My older daughter found one keeled over back by the pig pens…and I found one rigor’d by the stacked hay bales…..
…..nothing had attacked them…no one had munched on them…they were just deceased…..

I’m assuming it was the heat…..
We’ve started taking the horse’s temperatures…poor Crimson thinks it’s an incredible violation of her privacy…..

She totally clamps her tail down between her butt cheeks and refuses to let us easily take a rectal temperature…..
…..it’s like pumping a well pump handle…trying to get her tail up in order to insert the thermometer…..

But it’s the best indicator of how the horses are handling the heat…..
Crimson was looking sluggish and poorly a couple days ago…we took her temperature…and then decided to take everyone’s temperature……

Crimson was 104.2F…Oh !!#$%##!!!…That’s Not Good!…..
We took Tyra’s and it was 104.6F…!!#$%##!!!…That’s even Worse!!!…..
Pepper’s was 102.7F…that’s better…but still crappy!…..
They were all suffering!………….badly!…..

So…we started hosing……………Everybody!…..
…..for two hours…..

Tyra and Pepper and Crimson all stood patiently…they knew we were trying to help…the water must’ve felt good…..
We had lead ropes on all three…but none of them wanted to leave the hose…..

Finally…after hours of hosing and shriveled fingers…toes…and hooves…we were able to get their temperatures down…..
It took a long time…but Tyra’s got down to 100.5F…and Crimson’s to 100.6F…and finally Pepper’s got down to 100.7F…..

After that occurrence…we’ve set up scheduled water baths for throughout the day…..
Even them standing in the mud is good for them…because it has a cooling effect via their hooves to their bloodstream…..

Patrice and I are muddy and soggy and exhausted…but the mare’s temperatures are finally acceptable…..
We need rain…we need afternoon storms to break this excessive monstrous heat…..

But at this time of year…if you wish for rain…you just might get it…in the form of a hurricane barreling down on you…..
So you have to be careful what you wish for…..
***(Also here’s a word to the wise: Don’t ever turn your back on us, if we’re holding a thermometer)***
