The entire State of Florida is under a Heat Advisory…..

All the community swimming pools have been opened up…and no fees or admission charges are being collected…..

My previous post was about our extreme struggles with trying to keep our Clydesdale mare’s temperatures down to a healthy level…..

*****(What’s Too Hot For A Horse?)*****

The link that I’ve listed above helps to illustrate what’s healthy and what’s not with regards to a horse’s thermoregulatory system…..

And now I’ll list some of the recent on-going rectal temperatures that we recorded for our horses…..

Tyra:  102.5F;  105.2F;  105.7F;

Pepper:  102.7F;  105.5F;  106.5F

Crimson:  102.6F;  102.9F;  106.3F

NONE of those temperatures are a good resting temperature for a horse…..

NONE of those temperatures reflected a healthy homeostasis for our mares…..

ALL of those temperatures immediately prompted us to start hosing the horses…to desperately try to bring their core temperatures down to a healthy number…..

Some of those temperatures could easily be fatal…..

So we hosed…and we hosed…and we hosed…and we hoses…..

…..and then we hosed some more…..

And then one of us had the very bright idea of maybe using a different thermometer…..(!?!)…..

…..just for comparison…..

So we did…..

…..And These Were The Results…..

Tyra:  100.3F

Pepper:  100.6F

Crimson:  100.7F

…..Well…Well…Well…..

Do I feel stupid?………….Why, yes…..

Am I relieved?………….Oh my, yes…..

We are all hugely relieved………….hugely…..

I was actually able to sleep through the following night…..

Both the thermometers that we used were the reasonably priced…easily purchased ones…that are commonly used…..

But will I ever trust a digital thermometer again?…..

…..No…No…No…No!…..

We symbolically stomped that faulty thermometer into oblivion…..

Mary Constance told us that once she had a similarly malfunctioning digital thermometer which showed one of her horses had a temperature of 106+F too…..

…..but Mary Constance realistically immediately discounted it…and threw it out…..

And that’s why I respect Mary Constance…..

She’s always well-grounded and realistic…a bad thermometer is a bad thermometer…and that’s that…..

…..(me…on the other hand…I’ve been known to regularly run in circles…chasing my tail…over and over again)…..

BUT…here’s the good news…..

The Clydesdales are not suffering from the heat as much as we thought they were…..

…..and me…..

…..I’m a wreck…..

But…I’ve already purchased several old fashioned (and reliable) mercury glass thermometers…..
