Do we have cows?

No………….not yet…..

Would we ever have a herd of cows?

No………….(not intentionally)…..

But…I’m fed up with store bought meat…and what may or may not be done to it before I buy it & cook it & feed it to my family…..

…..same goes for the grocery store produce…..

We have enough land here for one or two cows…so…it’s not really rocket science…..

I just thought I’d apply some housewife logic here…..

…..and raise our own meat…(what could possibly go wrong with that idea?)…..

In the meantime…I’ve joined our State’s Cattlemen’s Association…along with our county’s Cattlewomen’s Association…..

…..What A Fun Group Of People!…..

We recently went to a couple of hosted dinners…by both organizations…..

I like steak…I’d be a vegetarian…if I it weren’t for the fact that I like steak so much…..

…..and that’s what they fed us…every time…..

And you know…it tasted different than store bought steak…(it tasted so much better)…like I remember when I was a child…(however forever long ago that was)…..

Every steak was done medium rare………….perfect…..

…..with salad…and potatoes…and string beans………….like I said…perfect…..

And at the last dinner…there were raffle drawings and auctions for guns…and hunting accoutrements…and quality knives…and hunting artwork…plus reloading equipment…..

…sadly…we won nuthin’…

My Dad would’ve loved it………….I loved it…..

…..and the steak…(ahhhhh)…..

Florida is a big beef producing State…there were more ranches represented than I thought were even in the State…..

Florida even has Cattle Drives!…..

Needless to say…the slavering developers are snapping at the heels of the ranchers to sell off their family land…so they can slap up more houses and apartment complexes…..

…(BTW:  a 1951 bottle of Whiskey auctioned for $1,800)…

Maybe increasing the impact fees for developers would slow their roll?…..

Maybe that would make them stop pushing ranchers to sell?…..

…..(can you tell which side of the fence I’m on?)…..

Even though we only have a measly small amount of acreage compared to these huge ranches…we’ve already put it in trust to our daughters to help preserve it…..

…what we lovingly call “The Back Pasture”…

But…back to the dinner…..

Other than maybe during the Cattle Show at the Florida State Fair…..

…..I don’t think I’d ever seen more of a collection of cowboy hats than we did at this dinner…(which happened to be at the Florida State Fairgrounds also)…..

There was even a raffle for a branding iron furnace…beautiful Western saddles…cattle prods…and custom made whips & lariats…..

It was definitely an interesting slice of life that’s alive and well in Florida’s rural countryside…..
