Back to the Bees

Back to the Bees

We’re coming up to Week #2.  The beasles still haven’t absconded.

They’re still here!

They’re super busy……………(I love saying this——-wait for it——-here it comes…)

You know……………..busy as bees…

Okay, it wasn’t as funny that time…

Yesterday I installed appropriately-made, hive-entrance reducers.

I’m sure my cut up quarter-round scrap wood was doing just fine.

Quarter Round Molding Pieces vs. “Official” Hive Entrance Reducer

But if the bees leave, I’d like to think I did everything right this time…

(No thanks to Monsanto/Bayer.)

Like I said before, these two hives have nice personalities.

I was poking around their front door with my hive tool and I didn’t even have to use the smoker……….(?)

I mean…………they were mad for sure………..but they weren’t nuclear mad…

Maybe there’s something wrong with them?

……….maybe they’re too lethargic……….is that possible?

They live on a diet of total honey……….how could they be too lethargic?

You think I might be over-thinking this one?

(I like this photo)

Maybe……………

But I did install the entrance reducers.  I put the pretty, knotted side of the wood so it would show on the outside.

See the pretty knot in the wood? Plus I think I put it in backwards & upside down…

I checked their gallon of sugar syrup……………they still had some left…

(that’s a good sign…….it means they are foraging for their own food now too)

I mix a product called “Honey B Healthy” into the syrup.  It’s all essential oils.

(It’s such a cute name it almost makes me gag.)

I don’t know if it helps……….BUT, it sure does smell good.

By the looks of it, the beazles like it too……………..so I’ll keep it up.

And I still haven’t been stung…………………by this time with previous hives, I would have been a puffy, swollen mess.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not complaining…

It’s just curious…

Maybe it’s because I’m checking on them more than I could with past hives?

You see……………..I can now……………I have four new, working, artificial joints.

(You might be wondering why does that matter……….?

Well, I can run again…

I’m not proud……………I didn’t get to my sixties with superfluous pride!

I know I can run away, if things head south around the hives…

I couldn’t do that before…

Falling in the swamp in a swarm of angry bees is not my idea of a good time…

Maybe that will translate into the hives being more carefully tended and more likely to stay……….?

I don’t know…

The older I get, the less I know…

I hope these guys stay and thrive…

  1. Glad the bees are happy! Fingers crossed they stay as “busy as bees” and in their hives!
