Baby Chicks & Figure Skating
Old meets new.
Or maybe it’s old meets older.
Farm-life and Sports Medicine.
I swear there’s a correlation here (well, in my life anyway).

This morning bright & early, I had the telephone right by my side. I was expecting a phone call from the United States Postal Service.
I knew this was going to happen, because I was sent the up-date & tracking information for my order of chicks which was being processed and shipped from Missouri.

My chicks are here! Tra! La!

I’ve got their brooders ready………….the brooders are actually just leaky aquariums that we dumpster-dove for (dumpster-dived?………..dumpster-diven?)…………..anyway we scavenged them from a local dumpster in between the loops of the security guard car…………………….we’re good at D-diving……………
We know when Mr. Security takes his breaks…………….his nickname is actually “Mr. Blinky” (because of the blue-blinking light on top of his vehicle).
Sometimes I just let my older daughter climb in and I drive around the corner a little ways away until she calls me……………….it’s an inside job………
Leaky aquariums work well as brooder terrariums for baby chicks………….that is, they work well, as long as you don’t use them for their original purpose and fill them with water……………and you make sure the heat lamp is the perfect temperature.

Not too cool but not too hot where you braise the little chirpers.
I’ve done my due-diligence and tracked the fluffy darlings from Missouri to here………………they arrived at the United States Postal Hub at 5:40AM…………….curiously that was just about the time I woke up too, and started waiting by the phone.
I’m awaiting the call so I know the chicks have been processed and are ready for us to pick them up.
We’ve set up the brooders in my older daughter’s bedroom………..because it’s the bedroom with the heavy-duty, lockable screen-door on it.

Doesn’t every house have a safe-room from un-invited critters?

Let’s face it, with a cavalcade of cats in the house and overly-curious dogs with the constant munchies…………………it would be the best chance for healthy longevity for the baby chicks to be behind lockable, heavy-duty screening………………….especially in our house.

It’s the safest room for them.
It’s also the same room where my daughter’s crested-geckos reside………………..(they are odd/curious little lizards—–I like their suction-cup toes).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the chickies have been settled into their new, roasty-toasty home with a 360 degree, leaky window-view————-
I switch my super-hero capes and become…………………….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Da……..Da………Dahhhhhhh…………..

Sports Medical Lady………………..!
As I’ve probably mentioned previously, or maybe I haven’t……………my former life & career was as an Athletic Trainer.
Years ago (pre-children), I worked on the women’s professional tennis tour…………but after following the tour for years……………I returned to my rural roots and had my babies.

Hence———-I reside in my swamp now, with no desire (whatsoever) to traipse around the world anymore………………no roots in an airport.
But this afternoon (post-chicken-care) I signed up for a good deed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I am working (volunteering) for a five hour shift at a figure skating competition at a large facility (just up the road) where they need sports medical coverage.
This should be fun.
Other than my own pond-skating experience from my youth in Ohio and New Jersey……………..I haven’t been around ice skating for decades………………………….it’ll be interesting terrain to deal with.
I’m wondering how to expediently get to an injured athlete on the ice?……………………..
I’ll be the one taking the prat-falls.
They said to dress warm.
Hope they have hot coffee.
I wish to express thanks to this writer for rescuing me from this type of scenario. Just after looking out throughout the the web and seeing views that were not powerful, I assumed my entire life was over. Existing without the presence of strategies to the problems you have sorted out as a result of this short post is a critical case, as well as the kind which may have in a negative way affected my career if I hadn’t come across your blog. Your good natural talent and kindness in controlling all things was excellent. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a solution like this. I can at this time look ahead to my future. Thanks so much for this skilled and results-oriented help. I will not think twice to suggest the website to anybody who would need guidelines about this area.
Piece of cake. Glad I could help.
I admire your work, appreciate it for all the useful blog posts.
