Crimson & Pepper

The mares were compliant…(Thank God)…..

They stood nicely for our new blacksmith…they didn’t lean on him…or take naps on his back…or squish him…or nibble off an ear…..

Pepper & Arizona

I knew Pepper was good with blacksmiths…but I was unsure about Crimson…up until now (apparently) she’s only been a pasture pony…..

But all’s well that ends well…..

No harm…no foul…..

Arizona has taken us on as new clients…and will come back again for other scheduled visits…..

We seem to have procured a new farrier…..

…..Phew…..

If needed…I know my older daughter and I could rev up the grinding wheel on our angle grinder…and sharpen up our hoof knives…..

We already have a hoof stand…and a shoeing stock…..

But a farrier’s skill is not our Forté…..

And there is a definitive skill that’s necessary to balance a horse’s hoof…trim their frogs properly…and be aware of the various problems a hoof can get into…..

But both mares kept their ears forward…with no snake-eyes…..

Pepper even seemed to snooze…..

It was a very anti-climactic event…..

…..and that’s how we want it to be…..

No abscesses…no hoof canker (Thank God)…no thrush…no white line disease………….just toe growth to be cut off and frogs to be shaved down…..

Crimson was curious…both of the horses snurffled Arizona’s bald head…and left him slobbered up a little…..

But again………….no biting…no striking…no kicking…..

…..(Double Phew)…..

The worst that the girls delivered was an occasional slight unwillingness to lift a foot…and a little obstinance when asked to stretch out for the hoof stand…so their hooves could be rasped and smoothed…..

But that’s all minimal misbehaving…practically all horses do it…..

Also…Thank God neither of our mares need shoes…we don’t do any street riding…..

…..and Florida is mostly made up of sugar sand…with minimal rocks…..

And Why Don’t We Want Shoes?………….well let me tell you…..

#1–This Farrier doesn’t do shoes…he only trims…no anvil…no forge…..

#2–Draft horse shoes are not the standard sizes~($$$)…they have to be made in a forge and hammered individually to fit each hoof~($$$)…..

#3–Plus–It would cost a Bomb and a Half!…every six weeks…and that’s only with the regular draft shoes…Let’s not even talk about the Scotch-Bottom shoes for high-stepping big hitches…..

…..I just couldn’t afford that…..

($$$~I’m sure each Clydesdale in this Hitch has custom-made shoes with borium studs for traction~$$$)
