Addy Is In A Family Way

Just when you think you are large and in charge…
…..you realize you are really just clueless and bringing up the rear…….

…………………sooooooooo, Dr. (Reverend)-(and yes, he reminded me that he has some sort-of-duly-ordained-computer-reverend-registry) Stevie Wonder finally found his way back home from Antartica to Florida…
And…….Dr. Wonder recently came out to our farm to “ready” the mares for breeding this spring…….

…….by “ready” I mean…….they needed to have their uteruses flushed…
…….(you know this is a farm blog…….so, don’t be shocked)…….
…….(personally, I think the big question should really be just WHAT have they been DOING over the winter that needs scheduled-springtime-irrigations!!??!!)…….
…….(and should I be checking the security cameras more carefully?)…….

…….(just what is going on out there in the pasture?)…….
Well…….Dr. Wonder is always a cautious-kind-of-guy…
He errs on the side of safety first…
So, he did a preliminary ultrasound on both mares prior to flushing…….

…..and lo & behold…….we discovered…….
Addy IS pregnant!!!
…..she’s expecting…….and expected to foal the middle to the end of June…….

A few months ago when both mares were last ultrasounded (and deemed “open”)…..it must have been immediately after Addy had been pasture-bred by Brave and the embryo was too small to show up on the ultrasound…….

…..so she’s been quietly packing a foal since then!
…..my first concern was…….what about the antibiotics? Will that be a problem for a developing foal?…….

…..apparently not…….
PHEW!

So, now we are in a rapid foal-prep-mode…
AND…….Addy’s NOT getting fat…….I had thought she was starting to get chubby…….

…..she’s not fat…….she’s pregnant!
One of the things we did immediately, upon finding out that she’ll be foaling sometime in June, was to plan on getting some of the goats bred…….
…..Why, you ask?…….

…..well, as a preventative, I say…….
You see, when Addy had her last foal with her previous owner, she didn’t produce adequate milk.

They needed to supplement the filly…
Sooooooooooooo, I figured that we will need goats producing goat milk…..ASAP!
Hence………………..running down goats in the mud…….catching them…….and selectively penning them up together…….
A.K.A.
…….the Great Goat Rodeo…………………
(more to come)…

Congrats, Addy!!
It’s so exciting…but now I have to ramp up the worry…I don’t have the full eleven months to spread it out.
